Social Science Research and Responses to COVID-19
 
Members of the UMBC social science community have been leading efforts to research and respond to COVID-19. 
 
A new National Science Foundation-funded project will examine intensified discrimination against Chinese-Americans in response to the global pandemic.

UMBC faculty and students have provided expert commentary and written op-eds for outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Huffington Post, Baltimore Sun, and more.
 
On April 17 at 1pm, the Center for Social Science Scholarship will host an interdisciplinary “Ask the Expert” virtual forum on social science responses to COVID-19, featuring faculty panelists from Emergency Health Services, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Public Policy. Visit our event page for more details.

The Center for Social Science Scholarship is also building an online repository of COVID-19-related research and responses by members of the UMBC social science community. Check out a video on disaster politics, a new Coronavirus Chronicles digital archive, and resources for those shifting to online research methods. We’ll be adding more in the weeks to come.

The Coronavirus Chronicles Archive is a publicly sourced, transnational database of stories about the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on everyday life. Based out of the University of Pennsylvania, one member of the team is Conor Donnan (MA, History 2016).


This project is for everyone embroiled in this crisis. It invites people of diverse backgrounds around the world to pen “diaries” of their day-to-day, as well as to share their thoughts on public health strategies. The resulting collage of stories, presented on an online platform, will facilitate a continued connection, and demonstrate that no one is or should be alone in this fight. The publicly sourced database will also serve as an invaluable archive for future researchers seeking a grassroots understanding of the pandemic, expanding their data sources from policy, and breaking news to include your stories. The voices of the majority of people are often neglected in history books, but this project hopes to enable scholars to include your diverse perspectives in future research about COVID-19.

We are pleased to announce issuance of a set of Current and Pending Support Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that accompany the revised version of the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 20-1), effective June 1, 2020.  The FAQs address policy questions related to the PAPPG clarifications to the current and pending support coverage, as well as questions regarding use of an NSF-approved format for current and pending support.  The FAQs will be updated periodically as appropriate.

As a creative response to the postponement of the DST2020 Conference, the conference organizers are initiating a project we call the “Digital Decameron.”  As in Boccaccio’s original, the project will run ten days, with ten stories featured here each day.  We will begin on March 30, the original planned start of DST2020.

We welcome your submissions.

We are inviting those who want to create new digital stories to do so, or find one that has inspired you, or look for one, as you might find on the StoryCenter YouTube channel, that you find particularly powerful.

There are no particular rules; it could be a new story or a previously created one; it could be a direct response to the current situation, or simply a story that celebrates humanity in all its imperfection; it could be a personal story, or any story you would like to tell in the circumstances. A length of less that five minutes is suggested.

Upload your new story to YouTube, or find a digital story and copy the URL, and send the link to: digitalstories@umbc.edu.  If you are uploading a new story, make sure you add your description as part of your upload process on YouTube.

Stories received before March 30 will be considered for the initial ten days.  Beyond this, we hope to grow the collection and keep it available here, so submissions will remain open after the 30th.

While this is on the links from the COGR page I felt this contained information that we needed to highlight.  It also contains a good video that links from the NIH COVID page.  One item I particularly wanted to highlight is:

a notice announcing that grant applications submitted late for due dates between March 9, 2020, and May 1, 2020, will be accepted through May 1, 2020. This notice applies to all relevant funding opportunity announcements, including those that indicate no late applications will be accepted. A cover letter providing a justification is not required. NIH will be extending the expiration date of most FOAs expiring between now and May 1. Be sure to read the notice carefully for details.
