Systemwide IRB for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

UMBC has signed on to a new effort by the USM Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation to streamline the IRB process for UMBC faculty proposing SoTL research projects that pose minimal risk to participants. The Kirwan Center has partnered with the Human Research Protection Program in the UMCP Division of Research to develop a systemwide standing SoTL IRB protocol that has been approved by UMCP’s Institutional Review Board. Under an agreement signed by UMBC and UMCP, UMBC faculty can now use a simple protocol amendment form to propose SoTL projects to go to the UMCP IRB for expedited review.

For the purposes of the protocol, SoTL is defined as the systematic investigation of student learning, instruction, and/or teaching innovations and the dissemination of findings so as to contribute to a broader knowledge community. SoTL projects at their essence aim to improve student success by providing an evidence base to help inform course design and instructional decisions undertaken by faculty and programs.

For general information on the project, visit the Kirwan Center’s Systemwide IRB for SoTL project page. If you are a UMBC faculty member interested in submitting a SoTL study for IRB review under the protocol, visit UMCP’s Investigator Support and Resources page and go to the “Systemwide IRB – Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) Resources” section to review the process and complete your amendment form. Faculty may contact the Faculty Development Center (fdc@umbc.edu) or the Office of Research Protections and Compliance (compliance@umbc.edu) in navigating the process.

Questions on the UMCP’s Institutional Review Board review procedures may be directed to sotlresearch@umd.edu.

<Tagline>How can we stimulate productive discussion & avert pitfalls?</Tagline>

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach midterm, it is timely to reflect on whether any small change in the structure and facilitation of class discussion may help us engage students in the kinds of conversations that will help them solidify their understanding, consider new perspectives, and think critically about ideas. The FDC recently hosted a program entitled Revitalizing Class Discussion during which two faculty panelists and attendees shared strategies for stimulating productive discussions and heading off common pitfalls. Several attendees described the session as energizing as attendees left with takeaways to try in their classes.
Apply now to participate in a Faculty Learning Community!

<Tagline>Applications for AY 2022-23 FLCs are due Friday, June 17</Tagline>

Dear Colleagues,

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. And if you generally prepare and teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to have the kinds of conversations with colleagues from across the disciplines that would enrich your teaching practice, help you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at UMBC fill this niche. The Faculty Development Center is pleased to announce four new proposed topics for the 10th annual offering of Faculty Learning Communities in AY 2022-23:

Teaching Creativity Across Disciplines

Flexible, Alternative, or “Un”grading Strategies

Inclusive Writing Pedagogies

Contemplative Pedagogies

What are FLCs? Faculty Learning Communities are groups of 6-12 self-selected faculty who are co-learners, joining together across disciplines for a year-long exploration of specific evidence-based teaching practices. FLCs support faculty in developing a new pedagogical approach, new kinds of assignments, and/or new ways to assess student learning. Participants who meet the attendance requirements (missing no more than 3 out of approximately 11 meetings over the academic year) receive a professional development award. The meeting format for each FLC, in-person or virtual, will be determined by the preference of the facilitators and the majority of the applicants.

Who is eligible? All current faculty, as well as staff who teach, are encouraged to participate.

To apply: The application form contains descriptions of each of the proposed FLCs. Please submit your application to fdc@umbc.edu by Friday, June 17th. Although you can only participate in one FLC, you may apply to more than one, ranking your choices on the application form. Pending budget decisions, the FLCs that receive the greatest numbers of applicants will go forward as FDC-sponsored FLCs for 2022-23.

To learn more about the FLC program: Please visit the FLC page on the FDC’s website.

Regards,
Kerrie

Apply now to participate in a Faculty Learning Community!

<Tagline>Applications for AY 2021-22 FLCs are due Monday, June 21</Tagline>

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. And if you generally prepare and teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to have the kinds of conversations with colleagues from across the disciplines that would enrich your teaching practice, help you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at UMBC fill this niche. The Faculty Development Center is pleased to announce five new proposed topics for Faculty Learning Communities for AY 2021-22:

Faculty Mentoring Faculty and Graduate Students (proposed by Suzanne Braunschweig, GES)

Teaching Creativity Across Disciplines (proposed by FDC staff)

Inclusive Teaching (proposed by FDC staff)

Fostering Pedagogies that Engage and Support Transfer Students (proposed by Sarah Jewett, Provost's Office)

SoTL Writing Accountability (proposed by Liz Stanwyck, MATH & STAT)

What are FLCs? Faculty Learning Communities are groups of 6-12 self-selected faculty who are co-learners, joining together across disciplines for a year-long exploration of specific evidence-based teaching practices. FLCs support faculty in developing a new pedagogical approach, new kinds of assignments, and/or new ways to assess student learning. Participants who meet the attendance requirements (missing no more than 3 meetings over the academic year) receive a professional development award.

Who is eligible? All current faculty, as well as staff who teach, are encouraged to participate.

To apply: The application form contains descriptions of each of the proposed FLCs. Please submit your application to fdc@umbc.edu by Monday, June 21. Although you can only participate in one FLC, you may apply to more than one, ranking your choices on the application form. The FLCs that receive the greatest numbers of applicants will go forward as FDC-sponsored FLCs for 2021-22.

To learn more about the FLC program: Please visit the FLC 2020-21 ThreadBox where you can check out and comment on the current year’s FLCs’ presentations of findings and takeaways. have good reasons for keeping their video off, so it’s important to
measure their engagement through other means, including polling, chat,
and discussions. In this session, faculty panelists will share their
experiences, lessons learned, and strategies to successfully engage students online.
The panelists represent a diverse set of disciplines and teach courses
ranging in size from 30-300. Many of the strategies they will be

can you energize your online classroom and engage students through
games and gamification techniques? Well-designed games for learning
motivate players to work through challenging problems that require them
to engage with concepts, take calculated risks, and reflect on the
learning process--collaboration and/or competition can heighten this
enjoyment (Gee, 2007; Smith-Robbins, 2011). Join us as we explore
general principles about using games for learning, specific examples
from UMBC colleagues, and applications to our own online classrooms.
Faculty panelists will present examples designed to engage students,
motivate them to learn, and create social connections as they
collaborate or compete to demonstrate their learning. The strategies are
not discipline-specific and are adaptable to many courses. Panelists
include Kerri Evans (SOWK) and Caitlin Kowalewski (BIOL).
