Please see the following message from Ana Oskoz:

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to share that Dr. Jennifer Harrison, Associate Director for Assessment in the Faculty Development Center (FDC), is retiring at the end of January 2026. In her 11 years with the UMBC FDC, Jennifer has consulted with numerous faculty and programs to develop effective assessment practices, supported the institution's Middle States accreditation efforts, led programs around all aspects of assessment and faculty development, and developed and published curriculum mapping templates. She has presented for a range of higher education audiences, consulted on student-centered curriculum development at other universities, and co-authored a book, A Guide to Curriculum Mapping: Creating a Collaborative, Transformative, and Learner-Centered Curriculum (Routledge, 2024) with Dr. Vickie Williams. Jennifer has taught courses at UMBC in the College Teaching & Learning Science certificate program, the First Year Seminar program, and the English department.

We are thankful for Jennifer's contributions to UMBC and the FDC and hope you will join us in wishing her well in retirement!

Ana Oskoz

Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

Photo by Marlayna Demond ’11 for UMBC.

Apply now to participate in a Faculty Learning Community in 2025-26!

<Tagline>Applications are due June 27, 2025</Tagline>

Dear Colleagues,

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. And if you generally prepare and teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to have the kinds of conversations with colleagues from across the disciplines that would enrich your teaching practice, help you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at UMBC fill this niche. The Faculty Development Center is pleased to announce six new proposed topics for Faculty Learning Communities in AY 2025-26:

Fostering Resilience: Pedagogies and Strategies to Address Student Stress and Mental Health

Designing Humanizing Assignments in the Age of AI

Exploring the Design and Delivery of High Impact Experiences (HIEs)

Designing Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Experiences Across the Disciplines

Inclusive Writing Pedagogies

Exploring Practical Metacognitive Approaches to Help Students Succeed

What are FLCs? Faculty Learning Communities are groups of 6-12 self-selected faculty who are co-learners, joining together across disciplines for a year-long exploration of specific evidence-based teaching practices. FLCs support faculty in developing a new pedagogical approach, new kinds of assignments, and/or new ways to assess student learning. Participants who meet the attendance requirements (missing no more than 3 out of approximately 11 meetings over the academic year) receive a professional development award. The meeting format for each FLC, in-person or virtual, will be determined by the preference of the facilitators and the majority of the applicants.

Who is eligible? All current faculty, as well as staff who teach, are encouraged to participate.

To apply: The application form contains descriptions of each of the proposed FLCs. Please submit your application to fdc@umbc.edu by Friday, June 27th. Although you can only participate in one FLC, you may apply to more than one, ranking your choices on the application form. Pending budget decisions, the FLCs that receive the greatest numbers of applicants will go forward as FDC-sponsored FLCs for 2025-26.

To learn more about the FLC program: Please come to the FLC End of Year Celebration on Friday, May 9 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. to hear participants in the current FLCs share the outcomes of their work. In person registration has closed, but you may join us online via WebEx by registering here. Also, visit the FLC page on the FDC website.

Best,

Kerrie and Sarah

Photo provided by Sarah Leupen.

Tipsheet: Encouraging Academic Integrity in the Era of Gen AI

<Tagline>Use best practices in course design & make AI policies clear</Tagline>

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) have complicated our efforts to foster and maintain academic integrity in instruction at UMBC. The FDC recently hosted a session entitled Encouraging Academic Integrity in the Era of AI to revisit best practices in course/assignment design; learn how to make policies around Gen AI use clear; and share strategies for dissuading students from inappropriate use of gen AI in light of the opportunities and temptations they present. Some of these ideas were also discussed in our Fall 2024 book discussions on Teaching with AI by Bowen and Watson. We heard that many of you were interested but unable to attend. Therefore, we've captured highlights from those shared at the session in our latest tipsheet.

Encouraging Academic Integrity in the Era of Gen AI Tipsheet

We hope that you find this resource to be useful!
Dear Colleagues (please share widely),

The Faculty Development Center and DoIT Instructional Technology and New Media were excited to have a visit from Dr. José Antonio Bowen at UMBC to facilitate two workshops, AI Literacy & Prompt Engineering and AI Assignments and Assessments, based on his book Teaching with AI, co-authored with C. Edward Watson, JHU Press, 2024.

If you were unable to attend, we invite you to read about Dr. Bowen and view the video recordings and slides from the workshops on the Faculty Development Center webpage. Dr. Bowen is a dynamic and in-demand speaker, and we have heard many comments from attendees about how inspired they were by the resources shared and the energy in the room. Hosted on Panopto, the videos are captioned and will adjust according to your device and bandwidth.

Please note that a UMBC login is required for access to these materials. You must be logged into myUMBC for authentication, and not just your UMBC email.

We hope that these resources are useful to you as we navigate new possibilities and challenges for teaching and learning in the era of AI!

Best,

FDC and ITNM Staff

Photo provided by José Antonio Bowen.
