<Tagline>Art projections "demo" at the Fine Arts Building</Tagline>

The event will include a conversation between Williams and curator Lisa Freiman. Hot refreshments will be served. Showings of the work will continue on select evenings in late February and early March.

The work is the result of the artist's Exploratory Research Residency at CADVC, ongoing since 2023. During this time, Williams has been researching the histories and mythologies of Cockeysville (Maryland) marble, a material used in many salient objects in the local built environment, including the Washington Monument and iconic exterior steps of Baltimore rowhomes. The film results from this research as well as movement workshops and other activities that included the participation of UMBC students and other Baltimore residents. Artist Nia Hampton, a current IMDA graduate student, and her mother, artist and arts advocate Sheila Gaskins, are featured performers. The filmic work was assisted by IMDA graduate student Bao Nguyen and artist Savannah Knoop, who worked on the project as an intimacy coordinator and facilitator.

dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore is an embodied consideration of the labor histories, and mythologies, surrounding a marble building material that appears throughout Baltimore's built environment. In the movement experiments surrounding the film work, participants negotiated relationships to public space, monumental form, and connections to history. In Williams's words, the project underscores the "intertwined history of African-Americans' plight to self-determined agency and full citizenship, and a rather benign stone."

This public display of an art work-in-process is consistent with CADVC's commitment to showcasing the experimentation of artists and the visual culture of interdisciplinary research. Currently, CADVC's gallery is exhibiting Spectrum of Process, highlighting UMBC faculty approaches to art and culture through rigorous, experimental processes.

Admission is free.

Visitors who need specific accommodations should contact CADVC at cadvc@umbc.edu or 410-455-3188 as soon as possible.

Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture
UMBC, 1000 Hilltop Circle
Fine Arts Building, 105
Baltimore, MD 21250
(410) 455-3188

Plan your visit

Images - 1. Levester Williams, "dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore" (2021-2024); 4K color video/video installation still (In a park-like setting, a person with dark brown skin tone sits embracing a white marble column from behind. White marble also forms the border around the pool.)

She not only administered our business and financial matters, but mentored staff and student workers and advised artists, colleagues, vendors, and partners on CADVC's highly specialized business and administrative matters. She is patient, helpful, and kind. Student workers under her supervision would stop by the gallery to greet Janet or tell her that "working at CADVC doesn't feel like work." Janet's generous administrative care sustained our physical space, working conditions, and the experiences of staff, artists and audiences alike.

So many people at CADVC and in the wider University know and love Janet, and we will all miss her.
CAHSS Colloquium: Resilience

<Tagline>Presented by the CAHSS Centers</Tagline>

The five research centers in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UMBC present this panel discussion to kick off the 2022-23 CAHSS Colloquium series, designed to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations among faculty, staff, and students to build intellectual community within and beyond individual research interests and curricula offerings. The topic for 2022-23 is resilience. Resilience is the ability of an entity, a person, an institution, a technology, a community, a natural environment, to anticipate, respond to, and recover from adverse conditions. The concept of resilience generally has a positive connotation, but it has also been criticized for placing on individuals and communities the burden to adapt to adverse and potentially unjust contexts. Adapting to adverse conditions may not necessarily improve them, so what is the relationship between resilience, resistance and social change? This panel will explore resilience from a variety of different perspectives. An open gallery and reception will follow the discussion.

This event is co-hosted by the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (CADVC), the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA), the Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3), the Dresher Center for the Humanities, and the Imaging Research Center (IRC) and is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Ann Brodsky - facilitator
Anne Brodsky is Professor and Chair of Psychology.
