Announcing the new Director of the Humanities Scholars Program
Kate Drabinski, Principal Lecturer in GWST
The Dresher Center for the Humanities is pleased to announce a new director for the Humanities Scholars program.
Dr. Kate Drabinski is Principal Lecturer in Gender, Women's, +
Sexuality Studies (GWST) and Associate Director of the
Women Involved in
Learning and Leadership (WILL+) program. Her focus areas of teaching
and research include queer theory, transgender studies, LGBTQ+ history,
and public humanities pedagogies and practices. As co-PI with Dr. Carole
McCann on the Mellon-funded Affirming Multivocal Humanities grant, she
organizes the UMBC LGBTQ+ Oral History Project, bringing students into
conversation with queer people both on and off campus to record and
preserve the histories of our communities. Her latest publication is
Baltimore Revisited: Stories of Inequality and Resistance in a U.S. City, co-edited with UMBC's own Dr. Nicole King and Dr. Joshua Davis of the University of Baltimore.
Outside
of UMBC Dr. Kate is an avid explorer of Baltimore's history, present,
and future, usually on her much-loved bicycle. She leads walking tours
about the city's LGBTQ+ and Civil Rights histories for Baltimore
Heritage, where she serves on the Board. She organizes walking tours for
students, faculty, and staff about the history of Pratt Street, public
transportation, urban renewal, and more. She is keenly interested in why
where we are is as it is, and how it might be otherwise.
Dr.
Kate is excited to direct the Humanities Scholars program after serving
on the committee for nearly a decade and teaching the freshman seminar
several times. She was part of a similar program at her undergraduate
institution and knows intimately the power of cohort-based
interdisciplinary humanities teaching and research for making more
interesting, meaningful, and impactful lives for all of us. She looks
forward to working with students, faculty, and staff to continue
building UMBC's vibrant humanities community.

Welcome or Welcome Back to UMBC Asian Studies!
Academic Year 2024-25
Greetings! Welcome to UMBC to our new students and Welcome back to our continuing majors and minors. I am pleased to be stepping back into the role of director of Asian Studies, on an interim basis, for this academic year. (For those of you who don't know me, I led the program from its inception in 2011 until 2017.)
Let me take this opportunity to thank Dr. Meredith Oyen for her excellent stewardship of the program during the previous six years. That stewardship included applying for a winning a large Mellon grant that is funding our Global Asias Initiative, the hiring of our Global Asias Initiative Post-doc, Dr. Mika Thornburg, and extensive involvement in the Asia Studies cluster hire.
Thanks to that cluster hire, this fall we are also welcoming FOUR (yes, 4) new tenure-track faculty whose research centers on Asia. They are:

Dr. Joonho Lee, Philosophy
Dr. Randolf Ford, Ancient Studies
Please be sure to welcome our five new faculty to UMBC and the Asian Studies Program when you meet them.

Exciting News in Asian Studies
Welcome back to UMBC for Fall Semester 2024!
We have some exciting things coming up this semester. If you need last minute advising or help with schedule adjustments, remember to reach out.
Additionally, students are invited to a workshop with Dr. Tina Chen, who will be visiting campus this Fall 2024 as part of our Global Asias Conversation series! Dr. Chen is the director of Penn State's Global Asias Initiative and founding editor of Verge: Studies in Global Asias. On Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 10am-11:30am we will host a Student Workshop / Breakfast. Tina Chen will lead students in a discussion of an assigned reading and explore student interest in Global Asias, Asian American and diaspora, and Asian Studies.

Families in Perilous Times: A CCF Workshop

Announcing Families in Perilous Times: A Council on Contemporary Families (CCF) Policy and Public Scholarship Workshop, a FREE symposium and public scholarship training workshop, to be held on Friday, October 18th, 2024, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Morning panels will focus on four topics that are the subject of contemporary debates, and have profound effects on families: The fall of Roe vs. Wade, Anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Student Debt, and Immigration law. See our exciting line-up of speakers here!
Afternoon speakers will provide training on podcasting, creating short research videos, and writing academic blog posts, brief reports, and op-eds about family research. Workshop participants will then break into small groups, give 3-minute roundtable presentations (and will be listed on the program) and will write short family-related public scholarship pieces in small group workshops led by senior CCF scholars.
Fill out this simple application by August 31st to participate in the hands-on afternoon workshop. Your public scholarship piece should be tied to an in-progress or recently published research project that is related to families. Graduate students are welcome!
Whether or not you will attend the afternoon workshop, if you plan to attend the morning or afternoon event, please register here by August 31st.

Audition for UMBC Symphony Orchestra and String Chamber Orchestra!
Interested in playing orchestral music at UMBC? Make music! Make friends! Receive course credit! UMBC has two orchestras: a Symphony Orchestra and a String Chamber Orchestra. Students majoring in any academic area are welcome to join.
Auditions, which are designed to be manageable during the start of a new school year, will take place on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 10am to 1pm. Please email Katie Bogdan (
kbogdan1@umbc.edu) to schedule a time. If you have a conflict with this date and time, please indicate that in your email and we will work with you to find a different time.
ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE:
The UMBC Symphony Orchestra performs orchestral literature from the 18th to the 21st centuries including both standard repertoire and contemporary works, from a broad range of musical styles. The UMBC Wind Ensemble, a group of diverse students and community members, has pioneered a new vision for the wind ensemble in the 21st century. Performing wind ensemble classics, world premieres of contemporary works, spoken word pieces, popular songs, collaboratively composed originals, and music with cultural influences from around the world, the group regularly collaborates with a wide array of artists and community partners to engage audiences in pressing social issues through music, multimedia, and discussion. Filtering, the ensemble's debut album released on the Albany label in April 2022, is available on all major streaming services.
