Asian Studies Students,
A virtual information session on the 77th Japan-America Student Conference will be held next Tuesday, October 29th, at 8:30 PM.! The conference in 2025 will be held in Japan in Kyoto/Osaka (July 31-August 7), Kumamoto (August 8-13), Tokyo (August 14-21).

Livewire 14: Resounding, featuring Annea Lockwood celebrates the work and completion of
I Resound Press, an online archive of scores and recordings by women composers selected for their imagination, innovation and craft. Featured guest composer
Annea Lockwood will interact with students and audiences in a variety of events, including a sound installation, public conversations, open rehearsals, and a concluding portrait concert of her recent works.

Looking for Presenters!
The MLLI Department will host its annual Research Day:
Friday, November 8th. Virtual. From 9:30 am to 1:00pm.
The 12:00-1:00 pm timeslot will be reserved for a closing keynote presentation by professors Dr. Eguchi (University of New Mexico) and Dr. Calafell (University of Oregon).
We will have a panel of INCC (Master's in Intercultural Communication) Alumni who will tackle the question, “Why Intercultural Communication,” to address professional opportunities/interests of students and others.
We are also looking for presenters!

Tanya Olson, Brian Dunnigan, and Elaine MacDougall Awarded Hrabowski Innovation Fund Grant
English faculty members Tanya Olson, Brian Dunnigan, and Elaine MacDougall received a
Spring 2024 Hrabowski Innovation Fund Implementation and Research Grant. Their project, “Balancing Innovation and Ethics: Incorporating LLMs into First-Year Writing Instruction,” will introduce Writing and Rhetoric Division (WARD) instructors and students to foundational knowledge about generative AI and large language models (LLMs), develop assignments and policies for integrating LLMs into first-year composition (ENGL 100), and promote AI literacy among WARD faculty and UMBC students. The grant includes support for four workshops available to all ENGL 100 instructors in the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters.

Jessica Berman Delivers Keynote Lecture at International Conference in Estonia
Jessica Berman, Professor of English, recently delivered a keynote lecture at an international conference on transnational modernist women's writing in Estonia. Read a message from Berman about her experience here:
In early October I was honored to present an invited keynote lecture at the conference on "
Borders, Margins, Cartographies: Transnational Modernist Women’s Writing" at the University of Tartu, Estonia. My talk, “Transing Modernism in Argentina”, based on my nearly complete book, explored gender and embodiment in Argentine modernism on the radio and in print. The conference was full of exciting work from an international group of scholars on little known women writers of the twentieth century. I also had a chance to explore a bit of Estonia, which was great! It's a beautiful country with a rich history that I'm glad to have learned about. I'm grateful to have been able to visit.

Advising Reminders! Winter Session! More Special Events!
Seasonally chilly weather isn't the only thing happening on campus lately. Keep reading to learn more about upcoming events, deadlines, and other news of interest for Asian Studies students!
Winter Session 2025 Registration Now Available
Registration for Winter 2025 began on Monday! The session takes place in January 2025. Asian Studies students may be especially interested in the following classes, which count towards your ASIA requirements:
- ASIA 300: Modern East Asia - Prof. Kim - online/asynchronous
- HIST 381: From Samurai to Salariman: Japanese History Through Film and Literature - Prof. Vaporis - online/asynchronous
- MUSC 230: Musics of the World - Prof. Purdy - hybrid (main campus
Note that HIST 381 counts towards your Culture GEP requirements, and MUSC 230 counts toward both Arts & Humanities and Culture GEP requirements.
Have You Signed Up for Spring 2025 Advising?
The schedule of classes for Spring 2025 will be available next week (Oct 21), and registration appointments begin as soon as October 29. You can sign up for an advising appointment now! Visit our website for more information!
Only students with clearance from their advisor - Dr. Vaporis or Dr. Kim, for Asian Studies students - can register for classes. Sign up early!

Asian Studies is pleased to welcome Dr. Anita Mannur, Director of American University's Asia, Pacific, and Diaspora Program, to campus for a guest lecture on Monday, November 11 at 1pm! Join us in the Library Gallery for Dr. Mannur's talk, "From Pandan Donuts To Masala Chai Ice Cream: Infusing Asian Tastes Into the Ethno-Culinary Imaginary." The Women’s Center is excited to present their new “Activism Blog” open to all UMBC students, staff, and faculty. Blogs should center around critical social justice, intersectionality, and feminism.
Submissions will be due December 1st
In preparation, they will be hosting a Blog 101 workshop to learn more about considerations when writing a blog. They will select the top 5 submissions and
honor the participants at a special luncheon open to the public, with keynote speakers!
This fun event will be on October 23rd from 12-12:45PM in the Women's Center, Commons 004! Make sure to attend and support the Women's Center!
