<div class="html-content">A few seats remain in INDS 330 <em>Ways of Knowing</em> and INDS 430 <em>Interdisciplinary Studies Seminar</em> for Spring 2013! <br><br>INDS 330 is a writing intensive course ideal for students who have completed ENGL 100 and have at least 45 credits. It is required of all INDS students but can also be taken by non-INDS students to fulfill their WI graduation requirement, so notify your friends! The section of INDS 330 with seats is on MWF 9-9:50 a.m.<br>Permission required - contact Carrie Sauter at <a href="mailto:casuter@umbc.edu">casuter@umbc.edu</a><br><br>INDS 430 is a special topics course called "Food: An Interdisciplinary Exploration". The Schedule of Classes provides this thorough description:<br>

<div><span>          American farmer and writer Wendell
Berry has written, "How we eat determines, to a considerable extent, how
the world is used."  We may similarly assert that how the current food
system is structured determines, to a large extent, how we eat.  Almost
all food carries a complex story interwoven with politics, environmental
consequences, human health and human history.  One intriguing story is
how the American food system relies heavily on fossil fuel: the average
food item is transported between 1,300 and 2,000 miles from farm to
table.  Another story is about how the national school lunch program
grew with multiple purposes: war readiness, commodity price support, and
childhood nutrition.  These complexities resulted in nutritionally
deficient foods in many school cafeterias.   Through case studies and
other research, students will examine such questions as:  Who are the
stakeholders in food system reform?  What are the implications for
health care costs of food system reform?  What are the
    barriers/challenges to change?</span>
</div>Held on Tuesdays from 1-3:45. Ideal for juniors and seniors! INDS 430 is required of all INDS majors but is open to any student who has this interest.<br>Permission required - contact Jill Wrigley at <a href="mailto:wrigleyj@umbc.edu">wrigleyj@umbc.edu</a><br></div>

<Title>Dr. Amy Bhatt publishes new book: Roots and Reflections</Title>
<Tagline>Available in January 2013</Tagline>

<div class="html-content"><div> <div><p>Amy Bhatt, assistant professor of gender and women’s studies, is the co-author of <em>Roots and Reflections: South Asians Map the Pacific Northwest</em>, which will be released by the University of Washington Press early next year.</p><p>The book examines the experiences of early South Asians who settled on the Pacific coast in the early 1890s through the 1990s. Though the east coast of the U.S. has some of the largest South Asian populations in the country today, these early settlers shed light on the development of South Asian communities across the U.S. and are an important location in understanding contemporary immigration patterns. <em>Roots and Reflections </em>highlights the gender, race, and class aspects of this immigration and settlement.</p><p>For an overview of the book, see the book trailer below.</p><span><div class="embed-container"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JHjtOvH0YdU?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen="webkitAllowFullScreen" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" allowFullScreen="allowFullScreen">[Video]</iframe></div></span></div> </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Originally posted here: <a href="https://umbcinsights.wordpress.com/2012/12/07/amy-bhatt-gender-and-womens-studies-publishes-new-book/">https://umbcinsights.wordpress.com/2012/12/07/amy-bhatt-gender-and-womens-studies-publishes-new-book/</a></div></div>

I went to the conference with a sense of dread (as is common for young professors going to their professional conferences) but it turned out to be a fantastic, if very challenging, experience.</div><div><br></div><div>I’m sure that you don’t want a play-by-play of my experiences (I took 4500 words worth of notes!), but I do want to give you the highlights to show you some of the things that some awesome people are thinking about. So, here are some of the really interesting panels and papers that I got to hear:</div><div><br></div><div>•A super helpful panel on strategies of publishing in academic journals. This is an essential skill for the young academic, so it was really good to hear from the editors of specific publications about what they look for and how they do peer reviews. Now I just need to submit some articles!</div><div><br></div><div>•An engaging panel on different approaches to teaching Intro to Women’s Studies (West Virginia University). This panel was based around using props, so we heard about teaching with cells (from a medical perspective), condoms (from a public health perspective), corsets (from a historical perspective), and blow up dolls (from an activist perspective).</div><div><br></div><div>•A paper by Danielle Henderson (University of Wisconsin-Madison) on her <a href="http://feministryangosling.tumblr.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Feminist Ryan Gosling tumblr</a>. You guys, she is awesome, and you really need to see her memes. Such an interesting critique/use of feminist theory!</div><div><br></div><div>•Two really useful papers by Jenn Brandt (High Point University) and <strong>Kate Drabinski</strong> (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) on using Twitter and Blogs in the feminist classroom. I am definitely going to try to incorporate these approaches in my spring courses. There are challenges to using those technologies, but I think that teaching students to write publicly and to engage in public debates is so important. ..."</div><div><br></div><div>Read the rest of the blog post at:</div><a href="http://tracylhawkins.wordpress.com/2012/11/17/nwsa-annual-conference-fascinating-topics-and-challenging-interactions/">http://tracylhawkins.wordpress.com/2012/11/17/nwsa-annual-conference-fascinating-topics-and-challenging-interactions/</a></div>
