<Title>CFP: Southeast Conference in Linguistics Meetings</Title>

    Coastal Carolina University is excited to host the 81st meeting of the 
    Southeastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL). SECOL 81 will be held <span><span>March 27-29, 2014</span></span> at the Embassy Suites Resort in sunny North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.</p><p><span>The
     Southeastern Conference on Linguistics invites submissions for papers 
    for the 81st meeting. Twenty-minute papers and panels of 100 minutes 
    relating to the conference theme of Atlantic Englishes are especially 
    requested. Papers in all areas of language and linguistics are welcome, 
    including papers and panels on the teaching of linguistics.</span><br>
    
    </p><p>Abstract
     should not exceed 500 words, excluding title and references. There may 
    be an additional page for references and examples. Authors may submit up
     to two abstracts, one individual and one joint.</p><p>Abstracts must be submitted electronically (.pdf or Word document) through EasyAbstracts starting on <span><span>September 15, 2013</span></span>. All submissions must be received by <span><span>11:49pm (EST)</span></span> of <u><span><span>December 31, 2013</span></span></u>.</p><p>Abstracts
     will be subjected to blind review, so author names should not appear 
    anywhere on abstracts. Authors' contact information will be collected

<Title>New INDS major Sophia Venero Speaks at Fall Opening Meeting</Title>
<Tagline>Incoming Presidential Scholar speaks at UMBC opening event</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Incoming INDS major and transfer student Sophia Venero Shimabukuro was one of two undergraduate students selected to speak at the August 22 Fall Opening Meeting. Ms. Venero is a transfer student from
    Montgomery College where she graduated with
    honors as an Associates of Art, as a Phi Theta Kappa member and Vice-
    President and as a Montgomery Scholar. She will be majoring in
    Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Biological Sciences.  Ms. Venero has been awarded the UMBC Presidential
    Scholarship which will cover her full- time tuition for two years. She plans to
    volunteer at the Shriver Center with the Success Program.  Ms. Venero has also been working as the Program Manager for
    KEEN Greater DC, which is a non-profit dedicated to providing exercise and recreational activities to persons with disabilities. Ms. Venero aims to become either a Physician or Physician's Assistant.  She is pleased to be joining INDS, and we are pleased to have her!</span></p></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div>After learning that an anonymous person used her profile picture to create a mean-spirited meme online, Kelly first tried to retrieve her image and stop the spread of the photo online. When those attempts were unsuccessful, she decided instead to respond publicly.</div><div><br></div><div>She wrote about her story, critiquing the systems of oppression at work in this cyberbulling episode, which you can read online at xoJane: "<span><a href="http://www.xojane.com/issues/my-picture-was-stolen-and-turned-into-a-fat-shaming-anti-feminist-meme" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">My Picture Was Stolen And Turned Into A Fat-Shaming Anti-Feminist Meme on Facebook</a>: </span><span>At first I was in shock. Then I got angry. Then I decided to do something about it."
