The Department of Foreign Languages at Towson University announces a conference, “Forging Linguistic Identities” to be held on March 12-14, 2015 and invites proposals for papers.  The conference seeks to examine language as socially embedded within historical and geographical contexts. Possible topics might include, but not be limited to:

-   Dialects/diglossia and their role in group identity formation

-   The standardization of national and/or majority language(s) and its impact on national or regional politics

-    Multi-lingualism in states and regions and its negotiation and practice by the communities of use.     

-    Use(s) of indigenous languages under transnational states

-    National reception of dialect/minority-language literature and verbal culture

-    Migration

-   Translation studies

The scope of the conference is not limited by region, language, or time period.  Proposals involving languages taught by the Department of Foreign Languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ancient Greek, Biblical and Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) are especially encouraged.  Proposals are welcomed across disciplines, from scholars of languages and literatures, geography, history, psychology and sociology.  Please send an abstract of 250 words by email to: Prof. George McCool (gmccool@towson.edu).  Please include your name, full address, institution affiliation, day telephone, fax and email address.  Please note that Conference papers must be limited to 20 minutes.

Faculty at all ranks are encouraged to participate.  Travel costs will be assumed by the participants.  We will offer discounted hotel rooms near campus, and a graduated scale of conference fees.

A peer-reviewed publication of selected acts is tentatively planned.

Founded in 2000, Wide Angle has worked with over 1,800 young people to create more than 75 videos about local community issues. Wide Angle Youth Media is seeking several interns for the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. College credit is available. Interning at Wide Angle Youth Media is a great opportunity to work closely with a small, dedicated group of youth media educators and to learn more about youth media as a tool for social justice.

In session one (May 27-July 3) MCS is offering MCS 222 (AH; 3 credits) on Monday and Wednesday from 1p-4:10p. 

MCS 222 offers students an introduction to the critical perspectives and research methods that are central to the analysis of mass communication policy and programming, new media, interpersonal communication, and audience reception. The course will provide students the skills to design and apply a range of interdisciplinary concepts and methods to media analysis projects. Themes of the course will situate various forms of media within specific historical and cultural contexts.


In session two (July 7-Aug. 15) MCS is offering MCS 101 (AH; 4 credits) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1p-3:50p.

MCS 101 is designed to help students critically engage with the media of communication, information, entertainment, and surveillance that surround us. Critical engagement includes understanding the history, political economy, and rhetorical power of these media. It also includes an introduction to the basic skills of multi-modal media production. Reading, writing, editing, composing, and publishing these traditional liberal arts skills are at the heart of this new media literacy, along with newer ones like remixing.

There will be three additional prizes of $50 gift cards! *ALL* graduate students from all disciplines are eligible, including both part-time and full-time students. 

 The Graduate School is administering the CGS Survey of Financial Standing, so that UMBC and graduate schools around the country can understand, and better serve, graduate students' financial needs.  If you did not take the survey in April 2014, please click here.

This is the Survey of Financial Standing. It is DIFFERENT from the Survey of Financial Perspectives that you took in October 2013. If you did NOT take the Survey of Financial Standing last month during our April 2014 round, please click the green link to take the survey.
