<Title>2015 NEH Summer Stipend Program &#8211; UMBC Nominations</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Successful applicants receive an outright award of $6,000 to support two consecutive months of full-time research during summer 2015.  UMBC may submit up to two nominations for this award.  The CAHSS Dean’s Office, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Dresher Center for the Humanities will work as appropriate with the two nominees selected as they prepare their applications to the NEH.</p><p><em>Instructions to Faculty</em></p><p><span>Review the guidelines <span> </span><a href="http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a><span>   </span>and <strong>submit the following materials to Scott Casper</strong>, Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences by <strong>Monday, September 8, 2014</strong>.</span></p><ul><li>A project narrative, not to exceed three-single-spaced pages, as described in the guidelines.  As the guidelines stipulate, the narrative must include an explanation of the part or stage of the project supported by the Summer Stipend and a work plan;</li><li>The names, positions, and affiliations of two or more potential recommenders, with, ideally, no more than one being from UMBC and with at least one being a scholar with expertise in the field of the proposed project.</li></ul><p></p><p>In addition to the quality of the application, criteria for selection will include the likelihood that the award will have a significant impact on the faculty member’s program of scholarship and that the work proposed for the fellowship period can be completed. Secondary considerations will be whether the individual has other available sources of support for the proposed work (e.g., support from UMBC or another sponsor) and whether the individual is concurrently being nominated for or applying for other awards.</p><p><em><br></em></p></div>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Asian Studies Irene Chan first came to Women's Studio Workshop in 1996 as a studio intern, then returned two years later as an Artist’s Book Resident to produce Cè, a sculptural book inspired by Chinese philosophy. <div><br></div><div>In the years since, Irene has cultivated a multidisciplinary conceptual practice, working at the intersection of print media, papermaking, installation, storytelling performance, and book arts. Her recent work stretches the physicality of the book form while exploring popular culture, racial stereotypes, autobiography, and oral history. 
    </div><div><br></div><div>Irene Chan has self-published 29 limited-edition artist books as Ch’An Press and has exhibited and performed her work at over 76 venues in the last 10 years.

<Title>LLC Warmly Welcomes Cedric Herring</Title>
<Tagline>Professor Herring joins LLC's faculty</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>The LLC is
    excited to welcome Dr. Cedric Herring as a new faculty member of the doctoral
    program. Prior to UMBC, Dr. Cedric Herring was Professor of Sociology and
    Public Policy in the Department of Sociology and in the Institute of Government
    and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is also the
    former Director of the Race and Public Policy Program at the University of
    Illinois and former Interim Head of the Department of Sociology at UIC. Dr.
    Herring is former national President of the Association of Black Sociologists.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Dr. Herring publishes on topics such as race and public policy, diversity, stratification
    and inequality, and jobs and economic development. He has published seven books
    and more than 60 scholarly articles. His most recent books are Critical
    Diversity: The New Case for Inclusion and Equal Opportunity and Combating
    Racism and Xenophobia: Transatlantic and International Perspectives." He
    has received support for his research from the National Science Foundation, the
    Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, and others. In
    addition, he has shared his findings in community forums, in newspapers and
    magazines, on radio and television, before government officials, and at the
    United Nations.</span></p>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D as Postdoctoral Fellows 
    for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2015.  The fellow will receive a 
    starting stipend of $40,000, health benefits, $3,000 for conference 
    travel and preparation of scholarly work, office space with computer, 
    library and other privileges at the university.  During the two-year 
    term of appointment, the fellow will teach one course a year in the host
     department.  All fellows are expected to be in residence during the 
    academic year and participate in departmental seminars and related 
    activities.  Each fellow will be provided teaching and research mentors 
    and specialized professional development opportunities across the 
    campus. The remainder of the fellow’s time will be devoted to pursuing 
    research.<br><br></div>
