The project is a four-year study of mosquitoes and environmental hazards and amenities in five west Baltimore neighborhoods. I need a GA to help with a variety of duties related to the project: recruiting community participants for activities such as citizen-science, participatory mapping, and the like; maintaining relationships with participants by attending meetings; helping with logistics for community events and activities; and, mostly next summer, there is a possibility of helping with sampling mosquitoes (training provided on the job -- it's very easy to learn the techniques). There will be some variation in work load from week to week, but the time commitment will average out to approximately 10 hours/week. I would like the person to start as soon as possible, and it would continue through the end of next summer with a strong possibility for renewal.

Conference Theme: Diversity, Creativity, and Art Expression

The conference welcomes proposals from experts in liberal arts education, social sciences, humanities, public policy, and scholars, academics, consultants, professional researchers, independent scholars, practitioners, artists and performers, and PhD/graduate students in liberal arts programs, humanities, interdisciplinary studies, social science, sociology, and history. Proposals may be considered as they are relevant to the theme of the conference. Early submissions are greatly appreciated. All submissions must be in Microsoft Word.

University Health Services is working on the Healthy Campus 2020 initiatives through the Healthy Retrievers Program here at UMBC. 

So much attention is focused on the health of undergraduate students in relation to success in college.  Since the lifestyle of a graduate student is often very different from the undergraduate, we are attempting to collect data to support our Healthy Retriever programming efforts specific to the graduate student population.  

We have constructed a very simple survey (no longer than 3 minutes) that we'd like for you to complete. This is an anonymous survey so no information will be linked to respondents in any way.  We ask you to take a moment and complete this survey. We'd like participants to complete it by October 10th.  

We want to help graduate students succeed, and this effort will focus on graduate students and their specific needs.  Thank you for your assistance.

We are gathering class schedules from our affiliated departments and encourage you to check our website again in a couple of weeks for that additional information.

As a reminder, you cannot register for any classes without first obtaining permission from your LLC advisor, so you are encouraged to consult with your advisor in a timely fashion.

The theme of the 2015 Electronic Literature Organization conference and festival is “The End(s) of Electronic Literature.” This theme plays on several different meanings of “ends.” Topics the conference papers and works will explore include:

Is “electronic literature” a transitional term that will become obsolete as literary uses of computational media and devices become ubiquitous? If so, what comes after electronic literature?

We can also question in what sense electronic literature and digital writing practices are a means to an end. If so, what are the ends of electronic literature? What political, ideological, aesthetic, and commercial ends or purposes do works of electronic literature serve?

In recent years, projects such as the ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Base have sought to highlight the work of scholars and artists who have worked outside of the mainstream of electronic literature as it has developed as a field, for instance developing research collections based on Russian and Brazilian electronic literature. This conference will seek to shed further light on international communities and practices in electronic literature that have not been widely addressed in the critical literature of the field, those that are located at the “ends” or margins of critical discourse in the field.

Electronic literature is situated as an intermedial field of practice, between literature, computation, visual and performance art. The conference will seek to develop a better understanding of electronic literature’s boundaries and relations with other academic disciplines and artistic practices.

As a laboratory for future literary forms, the field of electronic literature must count the youngest readers among its most significant group of end-users. One strand of this conference will focus specifically on digital reading experiences made for children.

 

Teaching academic writing and speaking courses to international graduate and professional students and contributing to new English Language Support Office.

 

The Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines is a comprehensive writing program serving students at all levels across the seven colleges of the Ithaca campus.  The English Language Support Office (ELSO) focuses on writing and speaking support for international graduate and professional students.

 

Teaching will focus on international graduate and professional students who use English as an additional language. Primary responsibilities will be teaching courses focused on further developing students’ academic writing, presentation skills, and conversational English as well as conferencing with students. Depending on interest and expertise, the position may include tutoring, training peer tutors, and facilitating faculty development or assessment of student learning or program effectiveness. These are non-tenure track, renewable 3-year positions that report to the ELSO Director. Positions begin July 1, 2015.
