Many of our students, despite being open to that diversity, still need to increase their cultural competencies - the skills and awareness related to communication and interaction across all social identities.

Student Life's Mosaic Center staff are creating a new Mosaic Center Diversity Presenters group to help develop this important life and interaction skill set within our students. This group, an outgrowth of our former Diversity Education Intern program, is the next evolution in our diversity and social justice education efforts. To prepare to launch this new initiative, this fall we are offering diversity "train the trainer" sessions to students, faculty and staff interested in serving as diversity and social justice education presenters. Our first 3 hour training for UMBC staff and faculty (and selected students) will be:

Friday, October 24, 2014

2-5 pm

The Mosaic Center, Commons Rm. 2B23

If you have prior diversity presentation and facilitation experience and can attend the training, visit our myUMBC group event and complete the brief interest form: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/themosaic/events/26236. If you have questions or can't attend this training but want to be a presenter, email mosaic@umbc.edu or call Lisa Gray directly at 410-455-8478.

We are pursuing a co-presenter/co-facilitators structure in which we hope to pair UMBC faculty and staff with students to present workshops to classes, student organizations and departments across campus by request. Students in this course will examine social issues affecting local residents through a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project. This semester students will research local urban agriculture projects addressing food deserts, access to healthy food, food security, and environmental problems. This research targets the intersection of local social inequalities, public health issues, and social change. Students will collect data through various methods in research teams, volunteer, document community needs, develop action plans, and make recommendations for change. The ultimate products will be a research report and community presentation.

Baltimore City Students Engage with Literature

<Tagline>Author Reyna Grande comes to UMBC</Tagline>

Baltimore City Students Engage with Literature
Author Reyna Grande comes to UMBC for a One Maryland One Book Event

On Tuesday, September 30, UMBC and the Dresher Center for the Humanities hosted 250 middle and high school students from Baltimore City Public Schools for an open conversation and book-signing with author Reyna Grande. Dean Scott Casper welcomed the students, along with Phoebe Stein, Executive Director of the Maryland Humanities Council. The event was followed by a campus tour.

The event was part of the One Maryland One Book program, coordinated by the Maryland Humanities Council. This year's book selection, Grande’s memoir, The Distance Between Us, was guided by the theme of “the American Dream.” In her book, Grande poignantly shares her life before and after entering the United States as an undocumented immigrant. The students, who read the work in English and Spanish, asked Grande about her relationship with her family after arriving in the United States and her experiences as a child growing up in an unfamiliar culture. The author described the dangerous journey from her home in Mexico to reunite with her long-absent father in the U.S. She told of her difficulties in obtaining an education and how she eventually became a writer.

One Maryland One Book Program Officer Andrea Lewis explains: “This event is held on a college campus each year to give the students the opportunity to meet the author of a book they’ve read and to learn about and experience stepping onto a campus. It’s an experience that exposes them to new things and offers a glimpse into what’s possible. The Maryland Humanities Council appreciates the partnership with UMBC and the Dresher Center that made this event possible.”

For information on the One Maryland One Book Program: http://www.mdhc.org/programs/one-maryland-one-book/

Tom Scott, Retrospective OPEN NOW! 10/9/14-12/19/14

Thursday, October 9 – Saturday, December 13

A free opening reception will be held for this exhibition in the CADVC on Thursday October 9 from 5 until 7 p.m.

Tom Scott’s career as an artist spanned more than 60 years, from the early 1950s through the first decade of this century. His output is remarkable not only for its temporal span but for its quantity and qualities, amounting to over 3,000 by his death at age 85 in March 2013. It is also remarkable for the particular span of time it covers: a unique time that saw the ascendancy of American art on the world stage for the first time and an extraordinarily fertile period of general artistic invention worldwide that included the creation and maturing of important sub-movements of modernism, and simultaneously the beginning of post modern tendencies in art.

But the welter of trends and movements largely left Scott unaffected after his work in abstract expressionism in the 1950s, as he resolutely marched to his own drummer, even while well aware of the flux around him. We sense in his work something apart from the mainstream and major movements, yet not at all reactionary or retrogressive. As an inveterate experimenter, his work has a complexity that defies easy categorization.

Over the span of his career he established a variegated practice incorporating the use of oil and acrylic painting, collage, assemblage, recycled materials, three dimensional works, and much more, including ground-breaking work with painted photographs and the use of aerosol spray paints. Finally all of Scott’s experimentation comes together in the work of the last 20 years of his career in a sustained burst of creative activity amounting to hundreds of works. These are a capstone for a long career, a distilled group of assured work the making process and organizing principles of which operate not only formally but psychologically.

This exhibition is therefore designed to fully demonstrate all these features in as comprehensive a way as possible, a dense and maximal presentation, and for the first time to allow the full range of works to be shown in one place at one time. Scott’s attitude towards his works was to be in an active dialogue with them. The exhibition is guest curated by Tex Andrews.

Admission to the exhibition is free. The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and is located in the Fine Arts Building. For more information call 410-455-3188.
