The Education Abroad Office is delighted to announce the continuation of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (CAHSS) Dean's Scholarship for Education Abroad!
Dean Kimberly Moffitt has pledged to provide a study abroad scholarship to students from every CAHSS department/program to ease the financial burden of this experiential activity, while also demonstrating our responsibility for educating our students to be active in the world they will soon lead.
Award amounts will typically be between $2,500 and $5,000. Applicants must apply to study abroad through UMBC at goabroad.umbc.edu and be degree-seeking UMBC undergraduate or graduate students with at least one major in CAHSS. Applicants must also meet eligibility requirements for UMBC study abroad programs. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as well as to students applying for UMBC faculty-led or exchange programs.
The current Deadline for students looking to study abroad in upcoming Summer, Fall, Academic Year, Winter, and Spring programs is February 10th. Winter and Spring applicants who are not selected may reapply in September.

This project's connection to UMBC is through Dr. Sarah Jewett of UMBC's Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health, who is completing a Fulbright semester at Loughborough this year.

B.A.: A Social Science Approach to Sports Injuries and Recovery

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
I was set on both wanting to study sports medicine and go to UMBC. I met with an advisor and heard I might be able to do that in INDS.
What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?
After graduating, I will start my Master’s degree in Sports Nutrition. My INDS degree has prepared me for graduate school and beyond my giving me a foundation in research, critical thinking, and a tailored knowledge base I could not get in a traditional program.

"Esther Inglis in Contexts and Culture" in October. The conference commemorated the writer and artist Esther Inglis in the quatercentenary of her death. The University of Edinburgh conference "[brought] together researchers working on different aspects of Esther Inglis’s life and work, and on the crafts, media and cultural contexts in which she worked." According to the
National Galleries of Scotland, "Inglis spent most of her career living and working in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Edinburgh and became known for her tiny, jewel-like manuscripts which combined highly accomplished calligraphy with exquisite illustrations in ink and watercolour" (as in the image below). Since 2006, the StoryCenter network in
partnership with universities and international organizations has
promoted Digital Storytelling Conferences, providing the global
community with an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences.
In its first time in Latin America, the 12th
International Digital Storytelling Conference will take place in Belém,
Brazil, in November 2025. Hosted by Museu da Pessoa , this edition will have as its theme 'Lives, Voices and Knowledge in a World on Fire' ,
exploring the power of storytelling in climate justice. We are
confident that this gathering will be a pivotal moment to inspire action
and strengthen partnerships towards a more sustainable and just future.
Taking place on the eve of COP30, which will also be
held in Belém, the event will offer a unique opportunity to share
stories, inspire action and strengthen partnerships.

Juan Sebastián Delgado named finalist for Charles Biddle Award
Dr. Juan Sebastián Delgado was honored as one of three finalists for the prestigious Charles Biddle Award, presented by the Quebec Ministry of Immigration (MIFI).
The award recognizes the exceptional contributions of individuals who have immigrated to Quebec and whose personal or professional commitment contributes to the cultural and artistic development of Quebec society.
Dr. Delgado says "While I did not win, I was deeply humbled to be nominated, especially as the only musician and the youngest finalist. This nomination is especially meaningful to me because it honors something deeper than just the artistic side of who we are —it recognizes the human experience as a whole. It celebrates the courage it takes to be an immigrant: the bravery required to adapt, to embrace a new culture, and to navigate the challenges that come with starting over in a foreign land."

Lindsay DiCuirci Awarded Spring 2025 Dresher Center Fellowship
Congratulations to English faculty Lindsay DiCuirci on being awarded a Spring 2025 fellowship from UMBC's Dresher Center for the Humanities! She will use the fellowship to continue work on her scholarly project, “The Vital Page: Spiritualist Print Culture and Phantasms of Reform in the Nineteenth-Century U.S." Dr. DiCuirci discusses her work in more detail in the message below:
“The Vital Page: Spiritualist Print Culture and Phantasms of Reform in the Nineteenth-Century U.S.,” is a study of the relationship between spiritualism, print culture and attempts at radical social reform between 1840 and 1870. It asks two key questions: How did a widely held belief in communication with the dead shape nineteenth-century reform efforts? What were the perceived affordances of print in bringing the spiritualist and reformist messages together? Spiritualists believed in the ability to communicate with the dead through spirit circles, trance states, and other forms of receptivity. For a community whose practices were based in the experiences of listening, feeling, and speaking, spiritualists contributed a surprisingly large body of print to the nineteenth-century marketplace. Their beliefs also intersected with the movement to abolish slavery, capital punishment reform, universal suffrage, women's liberation, and labor organizing, among other efforts. My book will look at the print ties that bound the spiritualist movement to these radical reforms and also to the biases that ultimately frayed those ties and undermined the spiritualist ideal of "harmonia."
