    <div class="html-content">Hi Everyone,<div><div><br></div><div>This is a friendly reminder about the graduate school fairs this week that Idealist will be hosting in Baltimore <strong>(TOMORROW)</strong> and in Washington D.C. <strong>(TODAY)</strong>. I will be at both events and hope to see a few Globalists attend, especially juniors and seniors.     <div class="html-content"><span>Students in your Political Science who are also enrolled in a UMBC teacher certification program are eligible for several scholarships distributed through the Education Department. Two scholarship opportunities are available for Spring 2015.</span><br><br><span>Applications are now being accepted for the Hattie M. Strong Foundation scholarships. <Title>UMBC Digital Media Lab &amp; Equipment Loan Information</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><a href="http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/dml" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Digital Media Lab (DML)</strong></a></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The DML is located on the second floor of the Library near the Honors College. The DML provides the UMBC community with access to A/V equipment as well as space to record. In addition, the DML has dedicated computer workstations for working with audio and video files. These work stations include access to Final Cut Pro and other software needed for audio and video editing.  A full description of the equipment and spaces is available on the DML <a href="http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/dml" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">site</a>.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div>The DML equipment can only be used in the DML space. Manuals and Quick-start guides are available for students to use. The DML assistants can provide basic instruction but overall the DML is self-serve.</div><div><br></div><div>If anyone will be sending students to the DML to complete particular assignments, please feel free to let <a href="mailto:hooverj@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Jodi Hoover</a> know ahead of time.</div><div><br></div><div><strong><a href="http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/equipmentloan" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Equipment Loan Program</a></strong></div><div><br></div><div><div>With funding provided by the AOK Library, DoiT and the New Media Studio the DML has been able to start a modest equipment loan program.  Equipment ranging from DSLR cameras to portable projectors is available for check out for three days at a time.  Equipment must be checked out from and returned to the Library Media desk. A full description of the available equipment and the loan policy is available on the site.</div><div><br></div><div>The DML will not be adding new types of equipment to the program but they will be adding 4 more Canon T3i's and 3 more tripods.  However, if you have suggestions for the types of equipment you'd like to see in the future, you could contact Jodi Hoover.</div><div><br></div><div>As of now, the DML is not providing a loan service for personal equipment on reserve for a specific class.</div><div><br></div><div>Please visit the DML website for more information.</div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Student Colloquium on Speech, Language <span>and Learning will be hosted at the </span><a href="http://jhu.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Johns Hopkins University</a><span> </span><span>(Baltimore, MD) on Friday, January 30 2015. The </span><span>Student Colloquium is intended to bring together students taking </span><span>computational approaches to speech, language, and learning, so that </span><span>they can introduce their research to the local student community, give </span><span>and receive feedback, and engage each other in collaborative </span><span>discussion.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div>Students are encouraged to submit abstracts describing ongoing, planned, or completed research projects, including previously published results and negative results. Student research in any field applying computational methods to any aspect of human language, including speech and learning, from all areas of computer science, linguistics, engineering, neuroscience, information science, and related fields, is welcome. Submissions and presentations must be made by students or postdocs. All accepted submissions will be presented as posters and some will also be invited for short oral presentations.</div><div><br></div><div>Student-led breakout sessions of one hour will also be held to discuss papers on topics of interest. The purpose of these discussion sessions is to stimulate interaction and discussion. Topics and suggested papers for breakout sessions should be submitted by students.</div><div><br></div><div>There will be no registration fee.
