The Korean Wave and Language Learning in the Digital Wilds

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar continues in Spring 2025 with a presentation by Professor Shannon Sauro. Her talk reports on the findings of a scoping review of research on fans of Korean popular media (e.g. K-pop, K-dramas) to explore what fan practices they engage in to learn Korean language and culture in the digital wilds.
All members of the department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments and institutions are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department.

The Gilman Scholarship enables Pell Grant recipients to study or intern abroad, while providing them with skills critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. By supporting undergraduate students who have high financial need, the Gilman Program has helped students who have thought study abroad to be financially difficult to participate in these life-changing opportunities.
The staff of the UMBC's Education Abroad Office will sponsor several information sessions in February and March to help students learn about the Gilman program, as well as offer guidance for a competitive application.

On January 21, 2025, Tony Hynes of LLC Cohort 19 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor or Philosophy. His degree will be conferred in May, 2025.
His virtual defense went very smoothy and he gave a powerful presentation of his dissertation research, "This is Us:" Social Connectedness Among Adult African American Interracial Adoptees.

Hosted by the Department of American Studies. The Greek Theatre Program, which is run by the British American Drama Academy, offers an incredible opportunity to work with leading academics and theatre practitioners in the UK and Greece. It is a month-long summer program dedicated to exploring the performance, reception, and modern relevance of ancient drama.
This is a multi-disciplinary course which combines theory and practice throughout. Course participants will spend the first ten days of the course in London before traveling to Greece for eleven days of workshops and visits to explore ancients sites and then returning to the UK for a final week-long residency at the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama in Oxford. The course dates for 2025 are 7th June - 4th July. The course provides a number of unique opportunities for participants to: - Visit ancient sites in Athens, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidaurus, studying and performing chosen extracts from tragedy and comedy along the way
- Work with leading practitioners from the National Theatre of Great Britain, Complicité, Shakespeare’s Globe and the National Theatre of Greece
- Research in the one-of-a-kind collections of the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama at the University of Oxford

We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Data Science Scholars (DSS) program for supporting students in Spring 2025. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines including non-STEM majors, who will examine all aspects of data and its impact on society. This year scholars will have the opportunity to be teaching fellows AND/OR research fellows. Scholars will be able to work on research projects in Climate Science, Deepfake detection, and other data science-related projects.
Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) Responsibilities:
Research Fellows
● Scholars who will work as research fellows, will work on a supervised research project and be mentored by faculty. Scholars will be paid $20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week.
● Scholars will attend at least two events in Spring 2025 and/or participate in research initiatives and professional development for their leadership growth and mentoring. Mentors will coordinate this at CS3.
● Scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with the faculty.
Background and Skills:
ALL applicants should have knowledge in AT LEAST ONE of the following:
● Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data
● Python or one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as R, Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing)
● Jupyter Notebooks with Python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.

SOCY 497: Family Research Seminar
New Spring 2025 Course! SOCY 497: Family Research Seminar (Tuesdays, 4:30-7pm)
Gain experience in research for your grad school applications and resume (no previous experience required) while learning about modern families and the latest research methods to study them! If you have already taken SOCY 353 (Marriage and the Family/Sociology of Families) or SOCY 300/PBHL300 and want to learn more about families, this is the course for you!
Class topics will include social change in the family, romantic and family relationships, (dating, marriage, cohabitation, divorce), stepfamilies and single parents, race and immigration differences in families, aging, childhood, childbearing and parenthood, abortion, queer and trans families, family caretaking, and family support. We will also question the family, examining people who avoid or cannot form families, exploring critiques of heterosexuality and monogamy, and discussing difficult family ties.
Students will also learn about a variety of different research methods used to study families, and will gain experience in conducting research on families.
Prereq: Intro to Sociology and at least 3 courses in SOCY/ANTH with a C or higher
Permission will also be granted to enroll for students who have completed SOCY 353, SOCY 332, SOCY 300, or PBHL 300 with a grade of B or higher but who have not completed Intro + 3 courses yet - If this applies to you, e
