It is a month-long summer program dedicated to exploring the performance, reception, and modern relevance of ancient drama. </span></div><div><br></div><div><span>This is a multi-disciplinary course which combines theory and practice throughout. Course participants will spend the first ten days of the course in London before traveling to Greece for eleven days of workshops and visits to explore ancients sites and then returning to the UK for a final week-long residency at the Archive of Performances of Greek &amp; Roman Drama in Oxford. The course dates for 2025 are 7th June - 4th July.</span></div><p><span> </span></p><div><span>The course provides a number of unique opportunities for participants to: </span></div><ul><li><span>Visit ancient sites in Athens, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidaurus, studying and performing chosen extracts from tragedy and comedy along the way</span></li><li><span>Work with leading practitioners from the National Theatre of Great Britain, Complicité, Shakespeare’s Globe and the National Theatre of Greece</span></li><li><span>Research in the one-of-a-kind collections of the Archive of Performances of Greek &amp; Roman Drama at the University of Oxford</span></li></ul><div><br></div><div><span>The deadline for applications for this year’s course is 1st February. Scholars will be able to work on research projects in Climate Science, Deepfake detection, and other data science-related projects.</div><div><span>Students selected through this effort will be part of the Data Science Scholars program, which will be run in partnership with the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology (CWIT),</a> the<a href="https://informationsystems.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Information Systems Department (IS)</a>, and the <a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3).</a> Selected scholars will be assigned to respective affiliations (CWIT/IS or CS3) depending on the student major, and the scholars' expectations per affiliation are as follows:</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><strong>Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) Responsibilities:</strong></div><div><span><em>Research Fellows</em></span></div><div><span>● Scholars who will work as research fellows, will work on a supervised research project and be mentored by faculty. Scholars will be paid <strong>$20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week.</strong></span></div><div><span>● Scholars will attend at least two events in Spring 2025 and/or participate in research initiatives and professional development for their leadership growth and mentoring. SOCY 497: Family Research Seminar (Tuesdays, 4:30-7pm)</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Gain experience in research for your grad school applications and resume (no previous experience required) while learning about modern families and the latest research methods to study them!  If you have already taken SOCY 353 (Marriage and the Family/Sociology of Families) or SOCY 300/PBHL300 and want to learn more about families, this is the course for you! <br><br></div></span><div><span><div><span>Class topics will include social change in the family, romantic and family relationships, (dating, marriage, cohabitation, divorce), stepfamilies and single parents, race and immigration differences in families, aging, childhood, childbearing and parenthood, abortion, queer and trans families, family caretaking, and family support. We will also question the family, examining people who avoid or cannot form families, exploring critiques of heterosexuality and monogamy, and discussing difficult family ties.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Students will also learn about a variety of different research methods used to study families, and will gain experience in conducting research on families. </span></div><div><br></div></span><div><div><strong>Prereq: </strong>Intro to Sociology and at least 3 courses in SOCY/ANTH with a C or higher </div><div><br></div><div>Permission will also be granted to enroll for students who have completed SOCY 353, SOCY 332, SOCY 300, or PBHL 300 with a grade of B or higher but who have not completed Intro + 3 courses yet - If this applies to you, e<span>mail Dr. Kuperberg at <a href="mailto:akuperbe@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">akuperbe@umbc.edu</a> with your name and student ID to get permission to register for the course</span><span>.
