    <div class="html-content"><h5><strong>Limited Submission Opportunity through the UMBC Office of the Vice President for Research</strong></h5><p><a href="http://research.umbc.edu/limited-submission-opportunities/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://research.umbc.edu/limited-submission-opportunities/</a></p><p><strong>Internal proposals are due by August 28, 2015</strong></p><p>The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend program provides funding for faculty and independent scholars to pursue research in the humanities during the summer. UMBC may submit up to two nominations for NEH Summer Stipends.</p><p>These stipends support individuals in advancing research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Though this is an NEH program, many faculty members in the arts and social sciences work on projects that the NEH might fund.     <div class="html-content"><h5><strong><br></strong></h5><h5><strong>Black Masculinity in the 21st Century</strong></h5><div><span>North Carolina Central University’s Departments of Language and Literature and Mass Communication will host the eighth African American Literature/Studies Symposium on Thursday, November 12, 2015. This year’s theme is “<em>Black Masculinity in the 21st Century</em>”. This symposium will explore contemporary approaches to the study of Black Masculinity in African American Studies. </span></div><div>Our keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African &amp; African-American Studies and Director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture &amp; Entrepreneurship at Duke University.</div><div><br></div><div>Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, the following:</div><div>Afrofuturism, Authenticity, Childhood, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Folklore, Disability Studies, Diaspora Studies, Drama, Hip Hop Studies, Intertextuality, Film/Television Studies, Literary Canon, Memory, Protest, Pop Culture, and Urban Literature</div><div><br></div><div>Graduate and creative submissions are welcomed.</div><div><br></div><div>Email a 300-word abstract and brief cv to Co-Chair Dr. Wendy Rountree, North Carolina Central University, <a href="mailto:wrountree@nccu.edu">wrountree@nccu.edu</a> and Co-Chair Dr. William Robinson, North Carolina Central University, <a href="mailto:wrobin15@nccu.edu">wrobin15@nccu.edu</a> by <strong>July 31, 2015.</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Participants whose papers are selected will be contacted in late August.     <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><h5>Graduate Coordinator for Cultural Programs Office of Student Life</h5><div><br></div><div>The Graduate Coordinator (GC) of Cultural Programs position provides support for the Division of Student Affairs and OSL specifically focused on cultural event planning, advocacy, training and assessment efforts for two student populations – those who self-identify as Asian/Asian American/South Asian/Pacific Islander. The GC is supervised and supported by the Assistant Director of Student Life for Cultural and Spiritual Diversity Initiatives. The person in this position is responsible for developing and implementing culturally-focused education initiatives and collaborating with student organizations, staff, faculty, SL and Division of Student Affairs partners. <Title>Michele Osherow Featured in "Mathematics of Being Human"</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Ahead of a scheduled performance of “The Mathematics of Being Human” on <a href="http://bridgesmathart.org/bridges-2015/2015-public-event/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">July 29 at the BRIDGES Conference in Baltimore</a>, the play received a positive review in <em><a href="http://sinews.siam.org/DetailsPage/tabid/607/ArticleID/471/Play-Takes-Aim-at-the-%E2%80%9CTwo-Cultures%E2%80%9D-Divide.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Siam News</a></em>. It <a href="http://umbc.edu/window/mathematics_of_being_human_2014.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">debuted at UMBC</a> on November 4, 2014, and has since been performed across the country in San Antonio, New York City, and Washington, D.C.</p><p>Featuring Michele Osherow, associate professor of English, Manil Suri, mathematics professor, Savannah Jo Chamberlain ’16, theatre, Chaz Atkinson ’16, theatre, and directed by Alan Kreizenbeck, associate professor of theatre, the play chronicles the struggles of two professors trying to develop a joint seminar studying the intersection of math and literature.</p><p>“I was lucky enough to get a seat at a performance held at UMBC, along with apparently a dozen or more of the students who had taken the real-life freshman humanities seminar that inspired this play.
