New Alumni Spotlight! Michael Fialkowski ('22) Discusses His Work at the Congressional Budget Office

Our newest English Department Alumni Spotlight features alumnus Michael Fialkowski ('22). Read a message from Michael below about his experience as an English major at UMBC and current job as an assistant editor at the Congressional Budget Office:

I entered UMBC’s English department at an uncertain point. It was the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I was making a significant career shift after more than a year in college. Thankfully, my academic outlook changed when I started the Communications and Technology Track. I connected with the courses from the start and was motivated by the professors' dedication to their work and teaching. I graduated with an internship, confidence in my skills, and work I was proud of and passionate about.

After graduation, I obtained an editing certificate from the University of Chicago Graham School. I also gained professional practice editing exams and training materials at a nonprofit association focused on housing. A year and a half later, I landed my current job as an assistant editor at the Congressional Budget Office, a legislative branch agency that supports Congress with nonpartisan economic analysis.

I have spent the past six months learning to develop reports and other products covering many economic topics, including health care, housing, and climate. I started with proofreading and now edit short reports, presentations, and letters to members of Congress. I also comment on early drafts, edit tables, apply styles to documents, review citations, and fact-check. During downtempo times, I enjoy researching updates to the agency style guide and writing macros that help with the editing process. The work is anything but dry; my editing skills are challenged every day, and I’m always learning as I prepare to take on CBO’s major publications.

Whether writing professionally or creatively, I do my best to represent my work with all my professors and classmates at UMBC. They are the reason I can keep up with my fellow editors. Under Dr. Shipka, I learned to channel my interests into novel research and engage with multimodal communication. Professor Shivnan, Professor Fitzpatrick, and my writing groups gave me an editorial eye and helped me look critically at my work. Professor MacDougall gave me vital experience engaging with authors in the writing center. And Professors Brooks, Rudacille, Burns, and Olson helped me orient myself in an unfamiliar academic space and encouraged me to experiment and find my voice.

Inspired by other law-enforcement first responses to vexing conservation problems, many countries, conservation organizations, and conservation advocates continue to seek harsher sentencing laws and punishments for people found guilty of wildlife trafficking or poaching. Drawing on his research from over the past eight years on illegal wildlife trade in ornamental plants in a variety of international contexts, Margulies will argue against this turn towards criminalization for perpetuating forms of conservation violence which ultimately undermines conservation goals.

Instead, drawing from examples of ongoing collaborative research, Margulies will make an argument for socioecological harm reduction in the illegal wildlife trade. Through examples from past research into the global illegal cactus and succulent trade, alongside ongoing research in the illegal trade in endangered succulents in South Africa and the carnivorous Venus flytrap in North Carolina, he will suggest how criminalization in conservation reproduces social harms that may further perpetuate ecological harms. A socioecological harm reduction approach to the illegal wildlife trade draws our attention to the entwined struggles for social and ecological liberation.

UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab: Paid Narrative-based Internship

<Tagline>Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 26</Tagline>

CoLab is an in-person, paid summer internship in narrative-based
research for UMBC undergraduates. Held during Summer Session One,
student interns will work on interdisciplinary project teams to conduct
research, create effective narratives, and develop public-facing final
products that support the goals of on and off campus community-engaged
organizations and scholars. Open to all majors, this is an excellent
opportunity for students in STEM fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in social science and humanities fields to gain research and technical skills.

Participants who successfully complete the internship receive
a $3000 stipend and a tuition scholarship for the 3-credit internship
    course.

Program Dates
CoLab 2025 will be held during Summer Session One and meets in-person from Monday, June 2nd through Friday, June 27th.
PLEASE NOTE: During these dates, student interns are required to
dedicate Monday through Friday from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm to the in-person,
on-campus internship. Participants will have preparatory work to
complete on their own the week prior to the in-person start date of 6/2,
and a final reflective paper to submit the week following the final
    in-person date of 6/27.
