Centered in the "burned-over district" of western New York in the 1850s, these mediums were not only channeling the dead but also challenging the living to reimagine the socio-political order, tackling issues like abolition, women's liberation, and prison reform. The talk will conclude with a reflection on the methods that Humanists use–and avoid–to write about spiritual matters and experiences in the past. How should scholars take spirit communications seriously as “evidence,” write about them as phenomena, and approach them with something other than incredulity?<br></div><div><br></div><div>~~~~~~~</div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>Join via WebEx: </strong><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/dreshercenter/events/140472/3b2ca/f40e341cc4a6de5ecb5bc6c43a1b6eaf/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fumbc.webex.com%2Fumbc%2Fj.php%3FMTID%3Dm9b87c613182c9edacec87f3ea4e45aee" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://umbc.webex.com/umbc/j.php?MTID=m9b87c613182c9edacec87f3ea4e45aee</a></div><div><br></div><div><u>This event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/dreshercenter/events/140472/3b2ca/3fe78829a133cc97813a0ac44de79737/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fecr.umbc.edu%2Fdiscrimination-policy%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">nondiscrimination policy</a>.</u></div></div><div><br></div></div>

Berkowitz Memorial Fund</a></h1>
<p>To commemorate the life and work of Bernard (“Bernie”) L. Berkowitz
(1927-2023), an endowed annual award program has been established to
encourage future generations of public servants who are demonstrating
characteristics exhibited by Bernie Berkowitz in his career in
Baltimore. The program is administered by the Center for Social Science
    Scholarship.</p>
<p>Born in 1927 in New York City to immigrant parents from rural
Hungary, Bernie grew up in working class neighborhoods in the Bronx. His
family’s experience with unemployment in the 1930’s was the basis of a
lifelong commitment to social justice and economic development. He
attended New York City public schools; graduated cum laude from C.C.N.Y.
with a major in economics, and received a Master’s in Urban Planning
from Columbia University. He served in the United States Army with
occupation forces in Japan and Korea.</p>
<p>In all of his endeavors, Bernie exemplified “no nonsense”
intellectual rigor, progressive social thinking, and creative thinking
about practical solutions. He aspired to improve the Baltimore community
by increasing economic opportunities. He believed in transcending
divisions – bringing together people of different social and economic
backgrounds. He is fondly remembered for his striving to “do the right
thing”, always with a sense of humor and kindness.</p>
<p>Award recipients will be selected annually by UMBC faculty in the
Center for Social Science Scholarship based on students’ demonstrated
interest in and commitment to planning and economic  development of the
Baltimore community. Candidates should reflect the interests, values and
character of Bernie Berkowitz. Preference will be given to those
interested in public service or not-for-profit careers.  </p>
    <p>Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to <strong><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/pubhum/posts/147982/6e99d/82d0101942de4cf94f265d19bd45033d/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fmy3.my.umbc.edu%2Fgroups%2Fcsss%2Fposts%2F147966%2F3a823%2Fd94a9655dfcf0ab2075cbe91ae1c5825%2Femail%2Flink%3Flink%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fdocs.google.com%252Fforms%252Fd%252Fe%252F1FAIpQLSdW4m1_VxcDFU_OVQK6RojCk_cEWHBjpfop5foOcHIvxz3iVw%252Fviewform%253Fusp%253Dheader" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">apply</a> by April 1, 2025.  </strong></p>
