Christine Yee, ECON, Discusses Job Growth with WalletHub

This story, by Max Cole, originally appeared here.

As the calendar turns to 2017, many Americans will be looking for a fresh start in finding a new or better job. With that in mind, analysts at WalletHub conducted a study to determine the best job markets in the U.S. and they consulted a panel of experts for context of what job growth will look like in the new year.

Christine Yee, an assistant professor of economics, spoke with WalletHub and addressed a number of issues including her prediction for the job market in 2017, the impact the new administration’s policies will have on job growth, the fields that are expected to grow most in the coming decades, the biggest challenges facing job seekers today, and the most common mistakes job seekers make when seeking employment.

Yee described how public spending contributes to slightly more than one-third of GDP. With the incoming Trump administration, she shared her thoughts on how specific sectors of the economy could perform in the new administration.

“Given the current discussion about potential policies under the new administration, spending on defense and infrastructure is expected to increase, which would increase the number of jobs in those sectors. However, the growth in healthcare spending is expected to slow down, which would in turn reduce the number of additional jobs in that sector,” she argued.

Looking at the future of the American economy, Yee predicted that healthcare, energy, artificial intelligence, and transportation will be the fields that grow the most in the coming decades.

As many people in the workforce look for new jobs during the new year, Yee offered advice for job seekers in a competitive economy.

“We all need to have the right skill set to be competitive in a global and changing economy, and we need to adapt to new technology and workflows,” she said. “Employees and employers alike need to understand how they can bring value to their customers.”

Professor Yee has research interests in health economics, public policy, applied econometrics, and labor economics. Read more about her work on the economics department website.

<Tagline>Book Release: Identity and Play in Interactive Digital Media</Tagline>

2017 begins with great news for our Language, Literacy, and Culture community.

Dr. Sara Cole Pitore '13 has just published her book Identity and Play in Interactive Digital Media: Ergodic Ontogeny. The book, which was built from her dissertation, is published by Routledge in its Advances in Game Studies series.

Here is a description of the book:

Recent shifts in new literacy studies have expanded definitions of text, reading/viewing, and literacy itself. The inclusion of non-traditional media forms is essential, as texts beyond written words, images, or movement across a screen are becoming ever more prominent in media studies. Included in such non-print texts are interactive media forms like computer or video games that can be understood in similar, though distinct, terms as texts that are read by their users. This book examines how people are socially, culturally, and personally changing as a result of their reading of, or interaction with, these texts. This work explores the concept of ergodic ontogeny: the mental development resulting from interactive digital media play experiences causing change in personal identity.

CONGRATULATIONS SARA!

From the JEP's Special Issue Introduction:

""In “Disrupting Scholarship” Craig Saper explores both alternative forms of publishing and alternative models of academic infrastructure. To his mind, there has been a conservative move in digital humanities, evident in its focus on visualizing, mapping, and charting, all of which work to preserve a fixed notion of the humanities. The question is this: what could the humanities be if it were not engaged in the fixing of meanings? Multimodal scholarship has been an important development in this respect, Saper argues. He is particularly interested in how reading will change to adapt to new forms of multimodal publication and, vice versa, how publishing will respond to such new reading practices. Saper provides examples in the form of his own experiments with publishing books that are precisely about the reading process, and his attempt to set up a university press for multimodal works and community-based scholarship at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In these experiments, Saper stresses, the publication process itself is to be seen as part of the process of writing. It is thus important to think about knowledge in relationship to the objects of study, where these objects are models for the form of the publication, based on their own sensibility: infrastructure here becomes poetry."
