Congratulations, Kevin Eliot Jayce!

We send our hearty congratulations to GWST alum Kevin Eliot Jayce, who just graduated from the Masters of Library and Information Science program at University of Maryland. Kevin's program plan focused on two core components: literacy for children / teens as well as diverse populations + inclusive services. The program allowed him to focus projects on marginalized groups: expanding services to Spanish-speakers, a digital literacy lesson for ex-offenders and pathfinders for trans* youth.

Kevin started a job before graduation at the Reisterstown branch of Baltimore County Public Library as a shelver then progressed up to a circulation assistant and then a part-time librarian. Kevin was promoted to be a full time librarian at the Loch Raven branch where I do a lot of the outreach work to different organizations in the community. Kevin has been doing regular story times at our Head Start, visiting the PAL Center to meet kids, making visits to the WIC office to speak with parents and other organizations. Kevin is also on a small team working on a systemwide training for initially managers, then all staff, that focuses on creating a discussion around diversity and how the library could be more inclusive overall.

We're proud to see Kevin using all those GWST skills to make the library an even more inclusive space for all. Kudos!

Dr. F. Chris Curran principal investigator on NIJ grant

<Tagline>Examining the role of law enforcement in schools</Tagline>

A recently received grant of approximately $620 thousand dollars from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) will fund innovative work examining the role of law enforcement in schools by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from UMBC and the University of Louisville. The study examines the role of sworn law enforcement, also known as school resource officers (SROs), in two school districts in the South with a particular focus on their role in the elementary school setting. The work is funded as part of the NIJ’s Comprehensive School Safety Initiative.

“Law enforcement have become an increasingly common presence in school settings, particularly after high profile events like the tragedy at Sandy Hook”, notes principal investigator Chris Curran. “Our work seeks to understand the role of these officers in promoting safety, managing student behavior, and facilitating relationships with students. The support of the National Institute of Justice allows for an unprecedented look at the role and impacts of SROs in previously understudied settings.”

In addition to the principal investigator, Chris Curran, the project is also led by co-principal investigator Benjamin W. Fisher at the University of Louisville and project coordinator Samantha Viano of Vanderbilt University. The study will be ongoing for a two year period and will involve extensive data collection through interviews, focus groups, large-scale surveys, and examination of administrative data. The findings of the study will be useful for informing partnerships between school districts and law enforcement agencies as well as policy related to the use of school resource officers. To date there has been little research on the reasons why law enforcement personnel become involved with schools, what they do in schools, and the impacts they may have on schools. This research project will investigate school resource officers (SROs) within elementary schools within an affluent, high performing school district. This projected is guided by four research questions: 1) why and through what process were SROs implemented? 2) What roles and activities do SROs engage in within schools? 3) What impacts do SROs have on schools and students? And 4) how do the roles and impacts of SROs differ across school contexts? Data will come from interviews with the districts’ SROs, and a sample of teachers, school leaders, students and parents. Researchers will conduct full day observations of each of the SROs and have the SROs complete time logs that document their activities over a two week time period. Additionally, researchers will analyze official policy documents such as the memorandum of understanding between the law enforcement agency and the school district. Qualitative analyses will be conducted on all data collected, and results will be disseminated in the form of academic journals, conference presentations, interactive websites, and policy briefs.

The conference will tie together various threads of struggle—our fight for water rights, our fight against ICE, our fight for public schools, our fight against threats to transgender people, our fight for ethnic studies, our fight against the prison industrial complex, our fight for the arts, our fight against borders and bans and the settler colonial project—into this singular knot of fighting for our lives. Free Minds, Free People 2017 is a space in which we will remind ourselves and each other that we are fighting for our fundamental right to live as full and free human beings, and we share a commitment to reimagining education as one critical weapon in in this fight.

Can you help more students participate in this event? Contribute to youth scholarships that will help students pay for food, rooms, and transportation.

Thanks to generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Queens College has undertaken a three-year project led by faculty and students to advance understanding and formulate plans of action that foster diversity and inclusion in urban communities and higher education. As part of this, the College will host a two-day conference to showcase research by emerging scholars in the humanities and social sciences.

The two-day conference will be held on November 13-14, 2017, on the Queens College campus located in the heart of the world’s most diverse urban place. Our students hail from 150 different countries and speak 70 different languages. The conference will afford ample opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and contribute to the professional development of the emerging scholars who participate as well as for students and faculty from across CUNY. A special reception for undergraduates, held on the first evening of the conference, will provide them a chance to meet and talk with conference presenters and attendees to learn more about shared fields of interest and careers in higher education. Conference proceedings will be broadcast via the web and also captured for later podcasts, thus amplifying their impact. Publication of selected papers as a book is also planned. Finally, time will be set aside for interviews arranged in advance of the conference for open faculty positions at Queens College and other CUNY campuses to take advantage of this recruitment opportunity to enhance faculty diversity.

Scholars, especially those in the early stage of their career, are invited to propose papers no more than 30 minutes in length. While limited travel and accommodation support will be provided, participants are encouraged to solicit funding support from their home institutions.

Learn more about the conference by go to: http://mellondiversity.qc.cuny.edu/

Learn more about Queens College by going to: http://www.qc.cuny.edu/Pages/home.aspx

Please send a 250-word proposal and CV to:

Mellon Conference Program Committee c/o Michael Wolfe, Dean of Social Sciences - michael.Wolfe@qc.cuny.edu

Deadline: August 15, 2017

Apply to an Object Lessons Workshop

<Tagline>Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities</Tagline>

How can scholars and nonfiction authors write for broader audiences while maintaining intellectual rigor and developing their academic profiles?

In 2017 - 2018, Object Lessons will host four NEH Institutes. These workshops will offer guidance and strategies for answering this question, especially in light of trends in the humanities toward open access publishing; evolving expectations for tenure and promotion; and the emergence of new publishing opportunities such as e-books, digital media projects, and online venues that cater to blended audiences across academia and general readerships.

This institute is designed for academics and writers who seek to write and publish for broad audiences, particularly about contemporary technology, everyday objects, and digital culture. The institute’s workshops—geared to scholars as well as nonfiction writers from across disciplines—aim to better equip participants to pitch their ideas and publish their writing in venues that exist fruitfully between both traditional academic and trade publishing routes.

WHO IS PUTTING THIS ON?

The hosts are Dr. Ian Bogost and Dr. Christopher Schaberg, founding editors of the Object Lessons essay and book series published by The Atlantic and Bloomsbury. Bogost and Schaberg—along with guest authors, editors, and publishers—will help participants navigate the new frontiers of academic publishing and increasing pressures on the academy to make its work legible to broad audiences.

WHEN AND WHERE IS IT?

The institute will offer four separate two-day workshops, coinciding with major academic field conferences:

Early November, 2017. Tempe, AZ. (around the annual conference of the Society for the study of Literature, Science, and the Arts [SLSA], Nov 9-12, 2017)

Late November, 2017. Washington, DC. (around the annual conference of the American Anthropological Association [AAA], Nov 29-Dec 3, 2017)

Early January, 2018. New York City. (around the annual convention of the Modern Language Association [MLA], Jan 4-7, 2018)

Early March, 2018. Tampa, FL. (around the annual conference of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs [AWP], Mar 7-10, 2018.)
Exact dates will be announced soon; pending final logistics, we hope to hold all workshops the two days prior to each conference.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

The workshops will feature lectures and practical exercises from the organizers, as well as discussions with visiting experts in journalism and publishing (trade and academic). Topics covered will include pitching, proposing, and crafting articles and book manuscripts.

The expected outcome of the workshops is for each participant to leave with a project suitable and ready to pitch and/or propose to a publisher or other venue. Such projects include (but are not limited to) online articles, longform essays, and general audience books. Work will not be limited to the Object Lessons series, although participants are welcome to pitch to us, too.

IS THERE FINANCIAL SUPPORT?

Yes. Participants will receive a stipend to offset the costs of travel, lodging, meals & incidentals during the institute. Stipends may vary based on unique circumstances at each venue and for each participant, but an average value of $1,000+ is expected. Participants who have already planned to travel to the conference can use the stipend in tandem with, or in place of, other institutional funding.

CAN I ATTEND THE CONFERENCE BEFORE OR AFTER THE NEH INSTITUTE?

Yes, your travel can extend to include the conference; however, conference registration, and any additional lodging and meal expenses will not be covered by the NEH institute during those additional days.

IS THE WORKSHOP LIMITED TO U.S. CITIZENS?

No. The NEH funds participants from any qualified applicant; however, most participants will likely be based in the United States.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Applicants should apply to a single workshop, below, no later Friday, June 30, 2017.

Applicants will need to submit:

A short statement of interest (no more than 500 words)
A concise C.V. (no more than two pages)
A writing sample (no more than 2,000 words)
A letter of support
Successful applicants will be notified by July 31, 2017.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA?

Approximately ten participants will be chosen for each workshop. Participants will represent a range of professional backgrounds, including college/university faculty, staff, and advanced graduate students; independent scholars; journalists; and other nonfiction writers. Participants will be chosen based on the following criteria:

Proposed project’s specificity, timeliness, and relevance
Evidence of ability to write for broad audiences
Promise and quantity of research already completed or in-progress
Potential for the applicant’s proposed topic to interest a wide audience
Applicant’s rationale for fit with the institute
Submissions will be reviewed separately for each workshop, so be sure to select a workshop date and venue you can attend.

WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT AREN’T ANSWERED HERE?

You can email us at workshop@objectsobjectsobjects.com. Please be sure to read this whole page first, though, before you generate email!

Please visit the Object Lessons website (link below) to apply.
