The article, titled "Why Microtransaction and Loot Boxes Are Destroying Games," examines the ways in which microtransactions (such as the sale of virtual currency, or VC, in the NBA 2K18 MyCareer mode) have hindered the quality of the gaming experience and "stripped [the consumer] of the only power he or she has in a marketplace: to place total value on the game itself."
UMBC is proud to launch RETRIEVER ESSENTIALS: a new faculty, staff, and student partnership to tackle food insecurity in our university community.

Across the United States, a large number of college students are skipping meals to make ends meet, often despite working full- and part-time and carefully juggling their finances to pay for housing, tuition, and other expenses. Lacking a steady source of nutritious meals can affect students’ physical and mental health, grades, and ability to engage in life on campus, and stigma can worsen the problem, discouraging students from seeking help. Retriever Essentials is designed to tackle these challenges head-on.

Retriever Essentials is launching three ways for students to access healthy foods and other essential supplies, free of charge. Paired with these resources are opportunities for UMBC community members to offer support.

UMBC offers multiple avenues of assistance to help all of our students succeed. Retriever Essentials is a community partnership that offers:

FOOD ZONES
Students can now pick up groceries, toiletries, and other essentials at a number of private, but also very accessible, locations across campus.
The Office of Research Protections and Compliance (ORPC) at UMBC will facilitate the workshop. ORPC will provide guidance to students so that they can utilize this allotted time to complete their certifications.

The speakers from ORPC will present during the first 30 minutes of the session to discuss creating a user profile, provide instruction regarding which certification blocks need to be completed (according to the type of research being conducted), and address questions. After the first 30 minutes, all participants will work independently within the space, using their own laptops to finish the certification online.

BRING YOUR LAPTOP AND CHARGERS/POWER CORDS. We will provide the space, electrical cords/power strips, food, and beverages to facilitate completion. We encourage students to set aside this time to complete their certifications during the session.

CITI has retroactively updated all RCR training completion expiration dates. When faculty and students log into their individual accounts, they should now be able to see when to take the refresher course. Please let the Compliance Office know if this is not the case. Users should also receive a reminder email from CITI when the refresher training is due.
