Introduction to Computer Science for the Social Sciences

This Spring Dr. Susan Mitchell will teach a special section of CMSC 201 Computer Science I designed for majors in the social sciences. The course will cover the same content and have the same rigor as the regular sections of CMSC 201 and prepare students to continue on to CMSC 202 if they wish. The major difference will be that the assignments and projects will be relevant to social sciences majors, covering skills such as statistical analysis, working with large data sets, and data visualization. The official description is:

An introduction to computer science through problem solving and computer programming. Programming techniques covered by this course include modularity, abstraction, top-down design, specifications documentation, debugging and testing. The core material for this course includes control structures, functions, lists, strings, abstract data types, file I/O, and recursion.

The course will include a lecture from 2:30pm to -3:45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Engineering 027 and a one hour lab on Tuesdays at either 11:30 or 4:00.

Permission from the instructor is required to register for this section. No prior programming experience is required. The only prerequisite is that students must have completed MATH 150, 151 or 152 with a C or better; OR have MATH test placement into MATH 151; OR be concurrently enrolled in MATH 155 or completed it with a C or better.

For permission or questions, email Dr. Susan Mitchell at smitchel@umbc.edu.

On October 21, 2017, Professor Tim Brenan spoke on a panel on the future of US antitrust policy at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Florence Competition Programme (FCP). His topic was highlighting questions to be addressed if antitrust is to pursue goals other than consumer benefits and costs savings that could result from increased completion. He was also named to be on the FCP advisory board.

Today, November 17, 2017, he is one of the presenters at a workshop in advanced regulatory economics held by the Center for Research in Regulated Industries (CRRI) in the Rutgers Business School. He will be speaking on the history of the "net neutrality" regulatory controversy at the Federal Communications Commission, and how Congress can reduce the controversy without specifying a solution by repealing outmoded provisions in prior legislation. His work on this issue intensified from being FCC Chief Economist in 2017, when the FCC was considering net neutrality rules that the current FCC is proposing to rescind. He has participated in the CRRI events for about 25 years and is one of its "Associate Center Faculty"

Call for Applications: New pilot with Wiki Education

Announcing call for applications for new pilot with Wiki Education to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia.

We are pleased to announce Wikipedia Fellows, an interdisciplinary project led by Wiki Education to train academic scholars to contribute to Wikipedia. This pilot is a key component of their effort to empower the public to participate fully as citizens by accessing important academic knowledge via Wikipedia. Read more about the Wikipedia Fellows program.

Our Wikipedia Fellows will join members from two other academic associations in a 3-month pilot, from January to April 2018. Participants will learn to contribute to Wikipedia, receiving guidance and support as they make contributions to important topics in their areas of expertise.

No experience with Wikipedia is required.

Participants are asked to commit 3 hours/week, including training and group meetings.

Wiki Education will provide training, guidance, and support throughout the process, using video conferences and Slack, a free cloud-based chat/collaboration service.

Participants will learn how to make significant contributions to at least two Wikipedia articles by the end of the program.

Informal support will remain available after the end of the pilot.

Fellows will fill out short surveys in the beginning and end of the program, and Wiki Education asks them to write one reflective blog post (on wikiedu.org) about their experience.

For more information, visit http://wikiedu.org/wikipedia-fellows/ or email wikipediafellows@wikiedu.org.
