The Poet's Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing

<Tagline>Opening Reception: Thursday, February 1st at 5 pm.</Tagline>

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture is pleased to present The Poet's Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch'ing. A renowned Chinese poet-painter, Lo Ch'ing creates art simultaneously rooted in
tradition and expressive of contemporary sensibility. His paintings
describe a path between the strong currents of his own short past, the
millennia-old past of the Chinese empire, and the demands of today’s
postindustrial, consumer-driven and individualist global citizen.

The exhibition, curated by University of Maryland professor Jason Kuo,
comprises 30 artworks and represents the artist’s first show in the
United States in ten years. Representing four decades of the artistic
activity, the selection of works ranges from smaller, poetic
compositions of the late 1960s to monumental, post-modern landscapes of
2015. Working in the millennia-old tradition of Chinese ink art, Lo Ch'ing's
paintings include familiar landscape forms of the genre, such as
mountains, clouds and river scenes, but he updates this hallowed
pictorial language with his own idiosyncratic vocabulary — one that
includes an array of modern symbols like airplanes, icons, asphalt and
skyscrapers — and aerial views impossible in ancient times.

Generous support for the exhibition catalog Lo Ch'img: A Contemporary Chinese Poet Painter comes from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative
Office in the United States (TECRO).

In a spirit of radical love, we will commemorate his birthday and Black History Month by joining a national event that will simultaneously transcribeportions of the Freedmen’s Bureau Papers.

TheDouglass Day Transcribe-a-thon is the first Humanities Teaching Lab (HT Lab) of the Dresher Center’s new Inclusion Imperative Program, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.Through the Inclusion Imperative Program, partners UMBC, Bowie State University, Coppin State University, and Howard University are cultivating a regional network of scholars, who are committed to diversity and inclusion in the humanities.Over the next four years, a variety of HT Labs will introduce faculty and students to new media tools and methods for community-engaged humanities teaching and learning experiences.During this HT Lab, faculty will learn about using activities such as crowdsourced transcription projects in the classroom and will be provided with a list of resources.

Please join colleagues at UMBC for this special event. We'll also have food, a birthday cake, and a dramatic reading of Douglass' speech from the 1876 unveiling of the Freedmen’s Monument in Washington, DC.

Laptops will be provided; however, personal laptops will be permitted. If you will use your own laptop, please sign up on the Smithsonian Transcription Center https://transcription.si.edu

Space is limited.
