MLA 2019 - Chicago - January 3-6, 2019: Call for Proposals

Pathways to Paradigm Change: Critical Examinations of Prevailing Discourses and Ideologies in Second Language Education

This panel explores L2 education discourses that support or hinder pedagogies promoting language learning as situated communication practices. We understand situated practices as learning how to become an effective member of a community by gaining familiarity and some degree of control over its relevant social processes and practices--including oral and written textual production and interpretation--with recognition of the social, cultural, and historical embeddedness of texts. Calls for teaching language and culture as integrated and situated practices have recurred for over two decades, however, while curricular responses to such appeals for change have been successful in specific, localized instructional contexts, large-scale paradigm change has not yet occurred, and traditional ideologies and practices continue to pervade the field of L2 education. Furthermore, methods course materials and practices continue to foreground historical perspectives and eclecticism, rather than guide future teachers in systematic, in-depth exploration of a single, principled approach that aligns with notions of language learning and use as situated communication practices. Proposals are invited that examine the current discursive landscape around L2 teaching and learning. Of particular interest are papers that propose ways of moving the dominant discursive needle forward toward effective paradigm change in L2 education.

Summer Class: PUBL 610-01 Evaluation of Policy Interventions

My name is Lina Martínez and I'm alumni of the master and Ph.D public policy program (2012). Since I finished the program I have been in my home country, Colombia, holding a position of professor in public policy and director of an observatory in public policy. Last year I was kindly invited to give a talk in the department and the option to teach a summer class came up.

The School of Public Policy has approved a 2018 summer class which I will teach, if there is enough enrollment: PUBL 610-01 Evaluation of Policy Interventions. See the summer listings: www.summer.umbc.edu. Registration begins March 5, 2018.

The class will have a strong focus on the practical issues of evaluation. The class is based on the experience I gained working at The World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. I can say by experience, that this kind of issues are not taught in most public policy programs, but are pivotal when working in public policy issues and the public sector.

The class will be a hybrid class in the second summer session (early July – early August) for 4 weeks and 3 credits. We will meet in the classroom in the evenings twice a week and other work will be online.

To have the class run, it is necessary to have at least 6 students. We´re sending this email out again in order to have an idea if enough students are interested on taking the class.

I´m attaching the syllabus for you to have an idea of the contents of the class.

Please if you are interested, email Sally Helms and let her know of your interest. You do NOT have to be in the Public Policy MPP or PhD in order to take this course. Registration begins March 5, 2018. Please register as early as possible so this course can run. www.summer.umbc.edu
