I felt as if I didn't have full autonomy in what I was learning and was able to pursue my interdisciplinary interest. Especially with my desire to code, program, create, and improve, I realized that I wanted to do so in the field of education. Thus, HCI (human-computer interaction) and ID/UX (interface design/user experience) became my primary academic and research interests. Media and communication are invaluable assets to this interface design, so I take classes in IS, education, and MCS to fulfill all aspects of what I initially thought I could never discover.</span></p><p><strong>What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?</strong></p><p><span>I plan to conduct educational technology research abroad and apply to graduate school to earn my PhD while also working a job related to curriculum design and development.</span></p><p><strong>Were you involved in any clubs or organizations? Did you hold any leadership positions? URCAD? URA? Off-campus internships? <Title>April 23: What's Going On? A Conversation Between Humanities Faculty and Students about Current Events</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Are you concerned about how current events impact you in a humanities major? Are you a humanities faculty member who has noticed growing concerns from students? If so, this discussion is for you. Students will have the opportunity to ask faculty about current events and their relationship to the humanities.</div><div><br></div>On April 23, the Dresher Center and Humanities Retrievers will host an conversation about current events between faculty and students in the humanities. The event will be held Wednesday, April 23rd at noon in the Dresher Center Conference Room, PAHB 216. <Title>Submit an Abstract to the CAAS Annual Meeting!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for submitting proposals to the Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States is this <strong>Friday, April 25 at 11:59 p.m.</strong><span> </span>Our Meeting is scheduled for<span> </span><strong>October 9-11</strong>, in Silver Spring, MD.</p><p>We invite faculty and students to submit abstracts for papers on any topic related to the classical world and its afterlife. Detailed submission guidelines are available in the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://caas-cw.org/category/2025-fall-meeting/&amp;source=gmail-imap&amp;ust=1745847710000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw07w5-JrUs3qEa1esGYAwcX" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Call for Proposals</a>.</p><p>CAAS offers<span> </span>monetary awards<span> </span>for excellence in four categories: Post-Ph.D. ($700), Graduate Student ($500), Undergraduate Student ($300), and K-12 Educator ($700). Additionally, readers of accepted papers are eligible for need-based<span> </span><strong>travel subsidies of up to $600</strong>. Subsidies will be announced in June.</p><p>Faculty and students are encouraged to submit proposals and engage with colleagues in the field. </p><p>Hope to see you at the meeting in October!</p></div>

This year, we are excited to add the Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards to the lineup. These three affinity events will honor and celebrate the achievements of UMBC's outstanding community members and graduating students.</span></p><p><span><strong>Inaugural Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Thursday, May 15, 2025</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. </strong></span></p><p><span><strong>University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor</strong></span></p><p><span>This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. </span><span><strong>We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia. </strong></span></p><p><span>During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.</span></p><p><span>Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. </span></p><p><span>Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. </span></p><p><span>Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." Jean Brownlee Professor of Anthropology<br></a>University of Pennsylvania</h6><h4><span><hr></span></h4><h6>The Question of Bodily Sovereignty, or Anthropology as Vulnerable Praxis</h6><div><div><br></div><p>What can the body reveal about ways of being and knowing that do not fit within Western frameworks? How does the body help us understand collective modes of world-building that exist outside of, but still interact with, modern political systems and legalistic notions of sovereignty? </p><p><br>Anthropologist Deborah Thomas will explore these questions by looking at the practices of Kumina, a Jamaican spiritual and cultural tradition that involves drumming, singing, and dancing.
