Keegan Cook Finberg to Read at Baltimore Book Festival
Keegan Cook Finberg, Assistant Professor of English, will be reading her poetry this weekend as part of the Baltimore Book Festival. She will be joining BBF featured artist Patricia Smith for "A Bunch of Incendiary Poets Poeting." Also reading at this event will be Gayle Danley, Kondwani Fidel, Dora Malech, Lady Brion, and others.
The event will take place on the CityLit Stage at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 30.

Language Training Specialist Position Opening
at Peace Corps Headquarters
The Language Training Specialist (LTS) is a non-supervisory FP-03/GS-13
position and serves as technical advisor on language program design and
management, language program staff development and language materials
development. The LTS collaborates to develop strategies, systems,
procedures and materials that support language programming, participates in the
collection and analysis of language training data and reports findings to
stakeholders within the agency. The LTS designs and advises on the development
of training for language instructors, developing standard curriculum, training
materials and guidance, and may travel to Peace Corps posts to provide staff
training and technical assistance. The LTS facilitates information and
materials sharing among country language programs and serves as liaison and
advocate for language training issues.
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.

Freedman, new Chief Development Officer, the Y in Central MD
Matt Freedman, a 1995 graduate of the School of Public Policy's master's program, has recently been named chief development officer with the Y in Central Maryland.
He was featured by the The Daily Record in an article on September 4, 2018.
According to "The Daily Record" article, he will lead all of the Y's fundraising initiatives, including the annual and capital campaigns, and the completion of the Y's $16 million Invest in Baltimore's Future Mission Expansion campaign.

Writing for Public Audiences through The Conversation
Info sessions to learn about writing for public 9/28
This Friday we will host info sessions for faculty to learn about writing for public audiences through The Conversation, an independent, nonprofit publisher of commentary and analysis written by academics for the general public (UMBC is an academic partner). Each session will be just an hour, and we'll have coffee and pastries. Faculty, PhD students and post-docs are also welcome.
The info sessions will be:
- Friday, Sept. 28, in Commons 318 (note: updated location).
- The 9:20 session on energy research is now expanded to include environmental research more broadly.
- The 10:30 session on research about nonprofits, philanthropy, and safety net issues is now broadened to include social disparities more generally.
These sessions are open to both faculty who are approaching this as a new opportunity and faculty who have already written for The Conversation, but would like to meet an editor in person.

Jacqueline Pollauf to Release New CD
Affiliate artist in harp Jacqueline Pollauf will soon be releasing her new CD, Songs & Dreams. Featuring her own arrangements and transcriptions, the CD blends classical, folk, and jazz music, such as Over the Rainbow, Scarborough Fair, and Gershwin’s Preludes. There will be a release party at the Hereford Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library on September 30, 2018. The recordings will be available both as a CD and through various streaming platforms, including Amazon, iTunes and Spotify.

Call for Papers: At the Boundaries of Ourselves: Masculinities & Decoloniality
Building off of the innovative presentations and lectures given at the American Men’s Studies Association (AMSA) conference in March 2018 in Minneapolis, this conference seeks to push forward the field of Critical Studies of Men & Masculinities further. Last year the theme – ‘Bodies, Sexualities, Masculinities’ – addressed critical gaps in the field related to sex and sexualities and their connection to bodies. Similarly, this year’s conference looks to examine the holes in the field related to issues of space, borders, location, the interface of space and ontologies (urban, rural, remote... hipsters, lumbersexuals, farmers, but also masculinity, mental health and space), masculinity and dis-location (spatial and ephemeral: inclusion/exclusion i.e.), borders and migration, nation building colonial invasion, ontological hybridity and buttressing (whiteness, one-drop politics, mestizos...), colonialism, indigeneity, and the ways that these impact on men and masculinities globally. As part of this, AMSA is hosting its annual conference for the second time outside of the US at Brandon University in Canada.
