Dinner with Friends to learn about and discuss candidates and issues in Maryland that are pertinent to the 2018 U.S. midterm election. You do not have to be an expert, simply someone with an interest in Maryland's civic life.
Through a series of bipartisan events created in collaboration with SGA, (seb), RSA, College Democrats, College Republicans, the Women's Center, the Honors College, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, and other campus partners, the goal of Election Night Extravaganza is to engage and encourage the UMBC community to let their voice be heard through our right to vote.

Alexia Petasis to present at AIS Conference in Detroit
What will you be presenting at the conference?
I am attending the Association of Interdisciplinary Studies conference to present my
choreographic works based on the Ph.D. dissertation of Nick Sousanis, Unflattening. I will be explaining how I
translated his images and words into movement within the context of the
Interdisciplinary Studies 330 course I took at UMBC. Specifically, I will
highlight how the interdisciplinary approach allows us to reach outside of
disciplinary constraints and, in my case, integrate the discipline of dance as
a way to communicate the critique of our standardized education system, as
expressed in Unflattening. I am excited and eager to meet Dr. Sousanis
at the conference as he has inspired me to see the potential of dance as scholarship
and activism.

Steven Dashiell won Best Student Paper!
Steven Dashiell, an adjunct professor in GWST and doctoral candidate in LLC (Dr. Carole McCann, chair), won the Best Student Paper Award in American Culture at the Popular Culture of the South conference in New Orleans, LA. Steven's paper "Penis in a Combat Boot: Erotic Images, Deployment Behavior, and Masculinity", combined components of masculinity theory to provide rationale as to why men are more likely to engage in some sexualized behavior under the constraints of military deployment. The paper was part of a panel titled "Erotics, Semiotics, and Manhood" and discussed how forms of erotica throughout history affect how we come to understand and interrogate masculinity.
The Popular Culture Association of the South has existed for over 40 years and is an academic organization examining popular and American culture. The conference recognizes the best Student Paper Award in American Culture and in Popular Culture each year, based on submissions.

Attention Fall 2018 Graduating Seniors
Graduating Seniors Portfolios are Due on or Before 12/3/18
In lieu of a capstone experience, students who intend to graduate
with a major in Asian Studies are required to complete a small portfolio prior to graduation. The portfolio is due to Dr. Meredith Oyen on or before Monday, December 3, 2018 and should contain the following items:

(1) Photocopies
of three assignments for two or more courses in Asian
Studies—preferably from three different years in the program (can be
long or short assignments, including work for language classes, and
copies of originals, with teacher feedback, are fine)
-
(2) A brief reflection (2-3 pp) on your study abroad experience(s), if you were able to study in Asia
-
(4) A
brief description (2-3 pp) of how you see Asian Studies impacting your
career or graduate school plans, focusing on roughly a 5-year time frame
The portfolio should be submitted in a manila folder with your name
and date of graduation on the cover. Please include a Table of Contents
for all items included in the portfolio, in order.
Again, this is to be
submitted to Dr. Meredith Oyen, Director of the Asian Studies Program
(oyen@umbc.edu), Fine Arts, Room 549 SOUTH, (on or before Monday, December 3, 2018) before Dr. Oyen can sign off on your graduation review.

You are invited to a screening of the film, “In Their Footsteps: An American Muslim Civil Rights Journey,” on Thursday, October 11, from 8:15pm to 9:15pm, in Lecture Hall One. The MSA will co-host the screening in collaboration with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the UMBC Black Student Union (BSU).
The goals of the screening are: 1) to get feedback from attendees and 2) to have the attendees go beyond being inspired, to sign up during/after the screening with actions they can sign up for to start doing racial justice work. For this last piece, we will be reaching out to other organizations as well as professors on campus who are involved with racial justice work.

Design historian Beverly Payeff Masey will document the intersection of post-WWII American Modernism with the international political and cultural realities of the Cold War through her talk, "Designing America's Face in the Cold War." Beverly will present the work of Buckminister Fuller, Charles and Ray Eames, Chermayeff & Geismar, and George Nelson as well as other architects and design professionals who worked on behalf of the United States International Agency in creating the American presence at international expos and World's Fairs beginning in 1958. This lecture is part of BaltimoreAIA's architecture month.

The CADVC will screen Mina Chow's film, "Face of a Nation: What Happened to the World's Fair" which explores the controversy surrounding American participation in World's Fairs. Mina's film has been presented at a number of film festivals so it's a treat to show this on campus. We're delighted that Mina will join us.
The American Political Science Association’s PS: Political Science & Politics has published a symposium co-edited by Prof. Susan Sterett, Dir. of School of Public Policy, and Dr. Jennifer A. Diascro of the University of California Washington Program. The symposium focuses on improving inclusion in the profession by using experience to diagnose problems. We are excited to announce that Jason Ashe, Human Services Psychology doctoral student, has been selected as a Health Policy Research Scholar, one of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s premier leadership development programs.
