The School of Public Policy and Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) are hosting a one-day Public Policy Camp at UMBC on March 12, 2019.

The purpose of the program is to introduce the field of public policy to a group of students who might not otherwise be familiar with it. APPAM is looking to increase knowledge, particularly among people who are members of groups that are underrepresented in public policy work.

This is a great opportunity to identify local students from diverse backgrounds who could pursue future education and career in a public-policy-related field.

The one-day program will consist of networking opportunities, group table activities, policy simulations, and panel sessions. Dr. Hrabowski and Dean Casper will be opening the event with remarks. There will also be discussions with the students about what public policy is, what the core competencies are in a graduate program of public policy or public affairs.

Students will also be able to hear from and speak with people who have MPP, MPA and PhD degrees and see what they do for a living, what a typical day is like for them and how their career paths have lead them to their current positions.

Registration for the event is FREE.

UMBC Students can register for the event through this link: https://goo.gl/forms/X38b0DEBAN9AdZbR2.

Conference on Interrogating Intersectional Masculinities

<Tagline>Call for Papers due June 1, 2019</Tagline>

For more than four decades, the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender (OSCLG )has brought together students, scholars, activists, artists, and practitioners interested in gender and language and committed to feminist principles. Masculinities have functioned, over that time, as a consistent object of critique, debate, conversation, and rumination–sometimes marked explicitly as such, but most of the time functioning in the background of analyses that center feminisms, women’s experiences, and critiques of femininities. OSLCG 2019 proposes bringing masculinities into sharp focus as the conference theme–not to displace scholarship about feminisms, women’s lives, and femininities, but to name and interrogate the operation of masculinities at work in the shadows of scholarship and activism around gender. Toxic and hegemonic masculinities lie behind many of the problems commonly addressed in feminist scholarship: gender violence (a physical manifestation of toxic masculinity), reproductive justice (resisting masculinist efforts to control others’ bodies), homophobia and transphobia (expressions of cultural policing of “proper” masculinity), and intersectional critiques that articulate awareness of the interaction of masculinities with other systems of power that produce inequality for people, such as nationality, race, class, physical and mental (dis)ability, religion, size, or economic status.

We welcome submissions of papers, abstracts, panel sessions, roundtable discussions, and performances that address any aspect of communication, language, and gender, and especially those that engage in interrogations of masculinities.

All submissions are due June 1, 2019, with decisions about acceptance expected by August 1, 2019. Submissions can be made at www.osclg.org.

The conference will be held on October 17-20, 2019 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Interculturality in Teacher Education and Training

<Tagline>International Conference Call for Papers due February 15th</Tagline>

Karlstad University in Sweden is hosting a conference called Interculturality in Teacher Education and Training: Methodologies, Criticality, and Sustainability from June 17 to 19, 2019.

This international conference aims to map out current approaches to interculturality in teacher education and training around the world. The organisers are especially interested in critical perspectives. For example, in relation to culture, Ogay & Edelmann (2016) call for ‘taking culture seriously’ – without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Abdallah-Pretceille (2003) has coined the concept of culturality to indicate the need to work from an understanding of culture that is changeable and contextually-situated (see also Dervin, 2016). Some perspectives have tried to do away with culturalism (culture as an explanation for all) and attempted to limit essentialism. There also seems to be a shared awareness of the danger of reinforcing ethnocentrism (believing that one’s group/culture is better than others) and “racism without race”.

Abstracts should be submitted by email to: intet@kau.se
