Public Policy hosts Public Policy Camp for regional students

<Tagline>Alumni, community leaders, and current students joined</Tagline>

On Tuesday, the School of Public Policy hosted a one-day Public Policy Camp with the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) for regional undergraduate students interested in Public Policy.

Dozens of students from UMBC and other universities in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and DC joined us to unpack the idea of Public Policy, and how they can explore a career and education in the field.

Alumni, current graduate students, and local community leaders led small group exercises, like policy analysis simulations, and shared their perspectives on panels.

UMBC President Dr. Freeman Hrabowski and CAHSS Dean Dr. Scott Casper welcomed the group in the morning, and the day's activities and panels were moderated by Public Policy faculty: Dr. Jane Arnold Lincove, Dr. F. Chris Curran, and Director of Public Policy, Dr. Susan Sterett.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and check out a fantastic write-up on the event here:

OPHSA is located in the Office of Policy, Planning, Legislation, and Analysis, in the Office of the Commissioner. OPHSA serves as a resource to the Agency for quantitative and qualitative research and analysis on emerging issues and for advancing work on priority public health initiatives. OPHSA does this through its work on initiatives such as opioids, drug pricing, and transparency, as well as by developing and executing research to link agency activities and outputs to public health outcomes.

The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) announces the availability of administrative supplements to support interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research focused on the effect of sex/gender influences at the intersection of several social determinants, including but not limited to: race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education, health literacy and other social determinants in human health and illness. This research includes preclinical, clinical, behavioral and translational studies with the specific purpose to provide Administrative Supplements to active NIH parent grants for one year to address health disparities among women of populations in the US who are understudied, underrepresented and underreported in biomedical research. The proposed research must address an area specified within Goal 1 and 2 of the new Trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research "Advancing Science for the Health of Women". These goals focus on advancing rigorous research that is relevant to the health of women (Goal 1) and developing methods and leveraging data sources to consider sex and gender influences that enhance research for the health of women (Goal 2). Projects must include a focus on one or more NIH-designated health disparities populations, which include Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, underserved rural populations, and sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Combinations of one or more populations is also encouraged, e.g. socioeconomically disadvantaged sexual and gender minorities.

ARI is the Army’s lead agency for the conduct of research, development, and analyses for the improvement of Army readiness and performance via research advances and applications of the behavioral and social sciences that address personnel, organization, and Soldier and leader development issues. ARI’s mission is to drive scientific innovation to enable the Army to acquire, develop, employ, and retain professional Soldiers and enhance personnel readiness. The mission of the Basic Research Program is to develop fundamental theories and investigate new domain areas in behavioral and social sciences with high potential impact on Army issues related to personnel readiness.

In addition to looking for proposals that provide for programmatic efforts to develop and evaluate psychological and behavioral theory, we strongly encourage Applicants to propose novel, state-of-the-art, and multidisciplinary approaches that address difficult problems. A key consideration in the decision to support a research proposal is that its findings are likely to stimulate new, basic behavioral research which, in turn, will lead to improved performance of Army personnel and their units. ARI will not support proposals through this BAA that are primarily applied research projects (e.g., human factors studies or training program evaluations) or purely focused on physiology, psychopathology, or behavioral health. Collaboration is encouraged among institutions of higher education (IHE’s), non-profit organizations and commercial organizations. Funding of basic research proposals within ARI areas of interest will be determined by funding constraints and priorities set during each budget cycle.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages innovative, targeted basic behavioral and social science and intervention development research to reduce incident HIV infections and improve the health of those living with HIV. This FOA encourages research designed to (a) conduct basic behavioral and social science research that is needed to advance the development of HIV prevention and care interventions, (b) translate and operationalize the findings from these basic studies to develop interventions and assess their acceptability and feasibility and (c) conduct tests of the efficacy of HIV prevention and care interventions. PA-17-106 uses the R01 grant mechanism while this FOA uses the R21 mechanism. High risk/high payoff projects that lack preliminary data or utilize existing data may be most appropriate for the R21 mechanism, while applicants with preliminary data and/or include longitudinal analysis may wish to apply using the R01 mechanism.

Call for new Faculty Learning Community (FLC) topics

<Tagline>Do you have a teaching and learning topic idea for a FLC?</Tagline>

"Academic culture
is a curious and conflicted thing. On the one hand, it holds out the
allure and occasionally the reality of being a 'community of scholars.'
On the other hand, it is a culture infamous for fragmentation, isolation, and competitive individualism--a culture in which community sometimes feels harder to come by than in any other institution on the face of the earth"

--Parker Palmer in Creating Campus Community, 2002.

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. But
if, as Parker Palmer laments in the quote above, you generally prepare and
teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to
have the kinds of conversations that would enrich your teaching practice, help
you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of
belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at
UMBC fill this niche: An FLC is a cross-disciplinary group of 6-12 faculty
who meet regularly throughout an academic year in a casual atmosphere to
investigate a teaching-related topic of mutual interest.

The Faculty
Development Center is currently seeking proposals
for new FLC topics. Funding is available to support 3-4 new FLCs in 2019-20. Any UMBC
faculty or staff member with an interest in investigating a particular need,
issue, or opportunity related to teaching and learning may propose a topic for
a year-long FLC that they would like to participate in with
colleagues. Proposals should describe the importance of the topic in 1-2
paragraphs in order to entice other UMBC faculty/staff to join the
FLC. Approved topics will be announced in late April.

The deadline for
topic proposals is April 1, 2019. Please forward your proposal to fdc@umbc.edu.

Some current and
recent FLCs have devoted their attention to topics such as:

Writing
questions to foster deep learning and engagement

Cultivating
critical thinking: Integrating information literacy into course content

Flipping
         the classroom

Getting
students to READ: Scaffolding students’ Reading, Engagement, Analysis,
         and Discovery through texts

Improving
student writing: Exploring evidence-based feedback methods

Teaching
         sustainability & climate change

Incorporating
         student technology into the classroom
