<Title>English Faculty Dr. Jessica Berman Named Lipitz Professor</Title>

    <div class="html-content">
    <div>UMBC English Department faculty member Dr. Jessica Berman has been named the Lipitz Professor of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences for 2019-2020. This professorship is supported by an endowment created by Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation "to recognize and support innovative and distinguished teaching and research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County."</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>As the Lipitz Professor, Dr. Berman will work on her current book project, <em>Media Relations: Modernism and Global Radio</em>. In this project, she studies global radio environments and the power of media to create complex transnational and often interlinguistic relationships. A truly global undertaking, Media Relations will connect voices, languages, literatures, and music from India to the Caribbean and from Argentina and Peru to Francophone West Africa. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Dr. Berman is the author of four books, including <em>Modernist Fiction, Cosmopolitanism, and the Politics of Community </em>and<em> Modernist Commitments: Ethics, Politics, and Transnational Modernism</em>, and twenty-two articles and chapters. She is also editor of the scholarly edition of <em>Purdah and Polygamy</em> by Iqbalunnisa Hussain, one of the first novels in English written by a Muslim woman, and of Wiley-Blackwell’s <em>A Companion to Virginia Woolf</em>.</div>

<Title>Ellen McLauglin's Oresteia at the Shakespeare Company</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Please let me know as soon as possible whether you plan to attend the performance of Ellen McLaughlin's <em>Oresteia </em>on May 25, 2019 from 8:00 to 10:35.  Tickets are now available on first-come, first-served basis for $10. 4 of the 15 places have already been claimed.<div><br></div>
    <div>The department has secured a UMBC coach to take us to the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 25. The coach will leave the circle behind the Fine Arts Building at 6:00 and return there after the performance (probably 11:45 or so).</div>

    <div>The mission of 1990 Institute is educating the next generation
    of Americans and Chinese to broaden and increase mutual
    understanding. In keeping with our mission, we are proud to
    announce an essay contest for all undergraduates which emphasizes
    the importance in today’s world of understanding modern China with
    depth.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Three prizes of $1000 ($3000 in total) will be awarded to one
    student in each of the following categories based on exceptional
    research and scholarship, subject to the requirement that the topic
    must be about or relate to modern China, focused on the following
    areas:</div>

    <div>• Economics</div>
    <div>• Women’s Rights </div>
    <div>• Technology</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Submissions are accepted now through May 31, 2019.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Winners will be announced July 15, 2019 and will have the
    opportunity to present their papers at CHINA NOW, a 1990 Institute
    seminar on modern China in Redwood City, CA July 26 and 27,
    2019.</div>
