The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) invites you to participate in a special workshop for students and young professionals who are traditionally underrepresented in international affairs.


We will explore how to:

·Build skills and competencies to compete in a global marketplace, and

·Prepare for and afford graduate school.


The workshop will also feature various panels and networking opportunities. This event is free. Lunch is provided.

Dear Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to attend and participate in the sixth annual Provost's Teaching and Learning Symposium at UMBC, which will take place on Friday, September 20, 2019, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in the University Center (and assorted classrooms).

Call for Poster Presentations
Posters should describe projects designed to enhance or assess students' learning or success at the University. To submit your abstract, please complete this Google form by Friday, August 2, 2019. Proposals will be screened for appropriateness to the Symposium, and authors will be notified by Friday, August 16 if their submission has been accepted. Further instructions about preparing and setting up posters will be sent to presenters in late August.

General Information
This Symposium, part of the Hrabowski Innovation Fund initiative, will bring together UMBC faculty and staff to discuss transformative learning experiences. The poster session is tentatively scheduled for 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Posters should remain posted through lunch and the keynote.

Her project, "Rhetoric of Uprising: Press Discourse of Maryland Race Uprisings from 1845-2015,” is a digital exhibition that Anna is completing for her Honors thesis. Anna will collect, curate and annotate primary sources from three uprisings in Maryland that center African Americans’ resistance to state-sanctioned violence: an 1845 uprising of enslaved people in southern Maryland; the 1968 Holy Week uprisings following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and the 2015 uprisings in response to the death of Freddie Gray. Anna will use her award to conduct archival research at the Maryland Historical Society, Library of Congress, and other regional archives and to purchase a web platform for her digital exhibition. The Summer 2019 Dissertation House is still accepting applications for its July 9 to 12 session. 

Students who are accepted must commit to participating all four days from 9 am to 5 pm. (Students may be excused for short periods for meetings with their faculty.)

Students are strongly encouraged to have consultations with their advisors and committee members prior to Dissertation House, and afterwards, to facilitate plans of action that are in line with faculty's expectations.

2020 Eastern Sociological Society Annual Meeting

February 27 – March 1, 2020

The Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) calls for proposals for its 90th annual meeting, in Philadelphia, February 27 – March 1, 2020. While submissions bearing on the above program theme above are especially welcome, all topics of sociological significance will receive consideration. Formats for proposals are multiple and include:

  • Individual papers
  • Entire sessions on a particular topic
  • Workshops on innovative methods and techniques
  • Roundtable and poster session presentations
  • Author-meets-critics sessions
  • Mini-conferences (Must be fully constituted).

DEADLINES: All proposals, except mini-conferences, October 15, 2019. Mini-conferences, July 9th, 2019.

Conference Theme: Harboring Innovation

In the spirit of communicative innovations and the work required to kindle new insights to impact our lives and our relationships, communities and world, the Voices of Diversity Interest Group of ECA invites you to submit your communication related work enveloping the concept of “Harboring Innovations.” With so many powerful events surrounding diversity, inclusivity, and social change, particularly those in Baltimore itself, our voices as communication scholars become more imperative in our actions, relationships, cultures, and communities. 

The purpose of the Voices of Diversity Interest Group is to explore the various theories and practices that pertain to the research, teaching, and study of communication within, between, and among diverse communities.

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites completed papers, panels, round table discussions, symposiums, and community programs across communication contexts that explore the pivotal role exchanging ideas plays in creating, maintaining, and changing what we communicate and how we communicate it.

The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites you toapply to Faculty First-Look. The application period opens on Monday, June 24 through Friday, July 12, 2019.  

Faculty First-Look (FFL) provides an opportunity to help prepare underrepresented doctoral/terminal degree candidates to prepare for research and faculty careers in higher education. FFL is a nationally selective year-long program that sponsors candidates for 2 round trip visits to NYU for specialized workshops and mentoring. Eligible fields are those within NYU-Steinhardt departments. Your help with this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.  Approximately 30 to 35 students are selected every year.
