Nick Allgood: How Quantum is Your Computer?

Description: Quantum computing is advancing rapidly and proving to be useful for a wide range of applications. One of the major benefits is for some algorithms. Quantum computing provides a performance improvement. While a performance benchmark is useful, the unique nature of quantum computing requires some additional benchmarks to take into consideration. Come learn how a team is measuring a quantum computer's overall "quantumness" by using Simon's algorithm, over several hidden period strings, to determine how often the IBMQ quantum computer is correct.

2021 Cohort Kickoff for PreMedical and Predental Students
Today and Next Week!
The PreMedical
& PreDental Advising Office announces its Kickoff Workshops for the
Health Professions Evaluation Committee's Fall 2021 Medical and Dental
School Application Cohort.
All
currently enrolled UMBC students who plan to participate in the UMBC
Health Professions Evaluation Committee process for the application
cycle for FALL 2021 entry into Dental School or Medical School (MD, DO,
and MD/PhD), must attend one of the following information sessions:
Friday, February 14, 2020, 12n-1p (confirmed location BIOL 120)
or
Friday, February 21, 2020, 12n-1p (confirmed location ITE 102)
Kickoff
Workshops are designed for students who are planning to apply to
medical or dental school with the assistance of UMBC’s Health
Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC). Attending one of the Kickoff
Workshops does not obligate you to apply for admission to medical or
dental school in the next immediate application cycle, but the Workshops
explain what students should expect during the lengthy application
process, and key information to help students perform a self-evaluation
of their readiness for application.
Attendance
at a Kickoff Workshop is mandatory for currently enrolled students at
UMBC interested in matriculating to medical or dental school during the
next immediate application cycle, and is the first in a series of
requirements that students must meet to qualify for the HPEC’s “
Eight-Week Guarantee.”

Linda Dusman, professor and chair of music, has been named the Bearman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship for 2020 – 2023. This role is designed to recognize and support a faculty member with an interest in entrepreneurship, outstanding teaching skills, and a strong record of scholarship in entrepreneurial studies or a field related to entrepreneurship.
The three-year appointment will enable Dusman to further her work with EnCue, an audience engagement app she co-designed for use during classical music performance

New perspectives of the colonial history of Puerto Rico
"The Museum of the Old Colony is one of those exhibits that you want to keep coming back to. There is so much to see, and I've learned so much," says one CADVC visitor about Pablo Delano's installation about the colonization of Puerto Rico by the USA, on view at the CADVC through March 14.
The Museum of the Old Colony illuminates the oppression of the past while alluding to the stark reality of Puerto Rico in the present — an unincorporated territory of the United States where U.S. citizens continue to be exploited, ignored, and underrepresented.⠀

Laura Bassi Scholarship for Editorial Assistance
Application Deadline: March 25, 2020
The Laura Bassi Scholarship,which awards a total of $8,000 three times a year, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed. The scholarships are open to every discipline and the next round of funding will be awarded in April 2020:
Spring 2020 application deadline: March 25, 2020, with results provided on April 15, 2020
All currently enrolled master's and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of employment.

Race for Profit: Keeanga-Yamahta Taylor Lecture, Feb. 13
Join us next week for the UMBC Daphne Harrison Lecture with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Assistant Professor of African American Studies, Princeton University. Her talk is titled "Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership."
The event will be held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall from 7:00-9:00 PM. A reception and book signing will precede the lecture at 6:00 PM.
"By the late 1960s and early 1970s, reeling from a wave of urban uprisings, politicians finally worked to end the practice of redlining. Reasoning that the turbulence could be calmed by turning Black city-dwellers into homeowners, they passed the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968, and set about establishing policies to induce mortgage lenders and the real estate industry to treat Black homebuyers equally. The disaster that ensued revealed that racist exclusion had not been eradicated, but rather transmuted into a new phenomenon of predatory inclusion. This talk uncovers how the push to uplift Black homeownership had descended into a goldmine for realtors and mortgage lenders, and a ready-made cudgel for the champions of deregulation to wield against government intervention of any kind."
