GWST Black Lives Matter Statement

The faculty and staff of UMBC’s Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies (GWST) department want to affirm our support for and solidarity with our Black students, faculty, and staff at UMBC and beyond. Black Lives Matter. Black Women’s Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter. Black Queer Lives Matter. Now and Always.

We also acknowledge that it is not sufficient to say that and go back to business as usual. GWST is committed to doing the hard work of reckoning with institutionalized racism, white privilege, and white supremacy in our own practices, and in the practices of the university.

To this end, we make the following commitments and demand that the university do the same:

We all take an intersectional approach to our research and teaching, addressing the complex intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, nationality, and other cleaving social differences to understand the operations of power, oppression, and freedom in historical and transnational perspectives. We will deepen this commitment and center the research and contributions of Black scholars in our classes. We must cite Black women scholars, artists, and activists.

UMBC sources many supplies, including university furniture, from Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE). We understand that the system of mass incarceration is rooted in the logics of white supremacy and chattel slavery, and that Black and Brown people, including queer and trans people, are incarcerated at incredibly high rates compared to their white peers. MCE claims the program gives incarcerated people job experience and satisfaction, but we understand it as part of the production of a material interest in extending the system of mass incarceration. We demand that UMBC lobby for the repeal of the state requirement to purchase from MCE. This is an important material step to take on the road to ending systems of incarceration for all. We commit to beginning this work at UMBC.

While UMBC has been a forerunner in recruiting and admitting Black, Brown, and other minority students, we push for the increase of admission of Black students. We will continue our commitment to their success at UMBC by working to sustain and expand the necessary tools and resources to succeed during their time here.

We will push the university to invest in hiring and retaining Black faculty members by supporting the Faculty Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship program and in our own hiring priorities. UMBC faces a hiring freeze, and when it thaws, increasing the number of Black faculty members on campus needs to be an institutional priority. We will make this argument in larger institutional settings and push for real material changes.

It isn’t enough to bring Black and Brown faculty to campus. We must work to address the institutional, organizational, and individual iterations of white supremacy and multiple forms of racism that create hostile and unsustainable climates for BIPOC faculty. Part of our retention plans must commit to the work of anti-racism on the campus as a whole.

We also commit to continuing to push the university to acknowledge, recognize, and value the invisible labor that our Black and Brown faculty, students, and staff do to build and maintain an inclusive culture on campus.

As we anticipate budget cuts resulting from the pandemic we commit to doing our part to ensure those cuts do not fall disproportionately on Black and Brown faculty, staff, and programs.

Many of the staff workers at UMBC are Black or Brown. We commit to working toward fair compensation for staff, both contractual and contracted, by pushing administrators to ensure fair contracts for all workers at UMBC.

These are big goals, but they are feasible goals that we are committed to honoring while working closely with faculty, staff, and students at all levels. We recognize that reckoning with anti-Black racism requires committing to a horizon that marks the world we want as we struggle, learn, and lead together on our way there. We see you, we hear you, we are ready to listen, and we are ready to work.

Signed,

Maria Celleri

Some of our Asian and Asian American friends, colleagues, and students have dealt with racist attacks and anger aimed at them, associating them unfairly with the virus’ origins. And in the last few weeks, the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have served as a stark reminder of the longstanding inequities in American society that disproportionately threaten Black lives.
MCS Faculty checking in with you

June 3, 2020

Dear MCSers,

Your safety, health, and well-being have been much on the minds of the MCS faculty, especially in recent days, when the challenges posed by the pandemic and economic crisis have been exacerbated and at times eclipsed by the horrific killings of Black men and women by police officers across the country. The protests that followed, the policing of those protests, and their representation across various media platforms have brought out the very best and the very worst in our society.

We’d like to take this difficult moment to share our support for the USM Statement on Injustice. It is a statement of what brings us together as a community that we can all be proud of.

We’d also like to remind you of the importance of your training in critical media literacy, history, and theory. You are sophisticated and thoughtful consumers and producers of media. You have learned to be wary of dubious sources, to reflect on the broader media narratives being spun by different producers. And you have been trained to think about the various ways sophisticated media messages are encoded and decoded by audiences in different social contexts.

For those of you who are overwhelmed by the pain and violence and seeming hopelessness of the present situation, we remind you of the necessity of self-care (which can be a radical act in and of itself). This might take the form of more engagement with media and other networks of information-sharing, or less. For those of you who come to this crisis from a place of relative privilege, we believe that often, the most powerful communication tool of all is listening.

We’re listening. And we want to hear from you. Finally, we want to remind you of the resources that UMBC provides for students in various kinds of need, which can be found here and here and here.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Adelman

Kristen Anchor

Jason Loviglio

to condemn the senseless murder of George
Floyd while he was in the custody of Minneapolis police officers. We
mourn the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor,
Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, and many others, who were victims of lethal
racial brutality perpetrated by police officers and white supremacists. We
strongly condemn the injustice such unprovoked killings represent. We join you
and millions across the country in demanding for justice to be imposed on those
responsible for these tragic deaths; and for a renewed focus on more effective
police and community interactions across the nation. As Africana Studies (AFST)
faculty, we unequivocally, condemn all acts of violence against peaceful
protesters and journalists by the police in cities across the country since the
    murder of Mr. Floyd.

As we
witness protests in cities across the country and in our own community
following the tragic murder of George Floyd, we write to express our support of
your concerns and efforts. Africana Studies came into existence out of moments
like this and therefore has been in the forefront interrogating systems and
institutions that produce such moments while advocating ways to mitigate the
debilitating effects of systemic racism and racial disparities and injustices
on our community and the society at large. We endorse the statements of support
by the University of Maryland System, and by UMBC, which you have seen.

We are witnesses to the latest waves of violence against Black men and women
amidst a historic struggle with the coronavirus pandemic that has
disproportionately devastated Black communities across the country. These
unprecedented circumstances have called us to engage with one another and
assist our community and its members. As we meaningfully reflect together on these
and so many other events, AFST faculty will continue to use our collective
resources to expose, challenge, and address all forms of racial disparities,
discrimination and injustices against Black people. We are available to listen
to you. Feel free to consult with us on any issues that would help you deal
with these challenging and difficult times. Stay safe.

Elaine MacDougall and James Wright Receive Crandall Award

<Tagline>to develop peer-writing-consultant training</Tagline>

LLC Students Elaine MacDougall and James Wright, both from Cohort 22, have just been awarded the 2020 Jodi Crandall Fellowship for Research in Language, Literacy, and Culture.

They proposed an interdisciplinary collaborative project for peer
writing consultant training to address global and local contexts for learning,
encourage peer writing consultants to critically reflect on their
    positions and identities in light of linguistic and cultural difference;
     consider multiple ways of knowing as professional writers-in-training;
question their own and others’ assumptions about difference; and
negotiate and problem-solve collaboratively across professions and
    identities.

Their project will include voices of
writing center administrators and up to 20 peer writing consultants from
various universities and high schools across the Baltimore area through
the already established Baltimore Metro Writing Centers Association.
Through this collaboration, they plan to develop a year-long, research-based
training series for critically exploring these questions at the
secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels through critical
reflective practice based in scholarship that encourages peer
writing consultants “to engage reflectively [in writing], mapping what they
understand” and “to explicate tacit knowledge” embedded in such
wide-ranging “intersections of self, experience, and the world.” (Yancey,
     2016)

P/F Advising and Summer Connections

As we transition into the summer after a very unusual semester, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1.) The deadline to change your grade in a course to pass/fail or retroactively withdraw from spring semester is June 10. You are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor before making any decisions. To that end, Dr. Oyen will be available by appointment on Google Hangout, over the phone, or by email. Send an email to oyen@umbc.edu to arrange your appointment.

2.) Similarly, advising for fall semester is ongoing, so if you still need advising or would like to discuss any of your options, please do get in contact (again, by emailing oyen@umbc.edu).

3.) Stay connected over the summer! Follow us on Instagram (@umbcasianstudies), Facebook or Twitter (@umbcASIA). This summer, we'll preview some of the fall 2020 course offerings, profile some of our students and faculty, and check in on our portable ninjas.

Have a healthy and restful summer, and let us know what you need.
