The Language, Literacy, and Culture Doctoral Program has moved back to the newly renovated A-wing!
Our new space is located on the 2nd floor of Sherman Hall, A Wing, Suite 202.
Many thanks to the Division of Professional Studies who welcomed us in their department the past two years.

Writing Histories of Reproductive Healthcare Now
Carole McCann, Professor, Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies
Fall 2025 Dresher Center Residential Faculty Fellow
Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPMD) is a fascinating site for considering complexities of US reproductive healthcare history. Founded in 1927, PPMD was the first affiliate established in a racially and religiously segregated southern state. Yet it always served both Black and white women, while its volunteers, doctors, and donors were largely drawn from Baltimore's Jewish community. This talk will consider the question of what it means to write about the history of reproductive health organizations in the current moment. Dr. McCann is particularly interested in thinking through how the ongoing attacks on reproductive rights and health providers might inform interpretation of the last time this work and organization was excluded from mainstream medicine and social welfare. In addition, she will consider the problem of limited archives: What do we lose when social justice organizations are so busy doing the work, they do not preserve their records of the work? What strategies can help us find traces in them in the historical record? And what preservation work might we owe to the history of our time?

Zareen's project is titled, Hazara
Women's Resistance and Resilience: An Autoethnographic Study
After her presentation, Zareen had a
substantive discussion with her committee about the next stages of her work.
The committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped
Zareen consider some key issues as she moves forward into the research and
writing.

Director and Prof. Loren Henderson publishes article on implementation outcomes in Maryland hospital perinatal programs
Published in Implementation Science Communications
Public Policy Director and Professor Loren Henderson published research in the journal Implementation Science Communications. In their study, Dr. Henderson and co-authors examined internal facilitation (IF) processes among hospitals participating in Maryland's perinatal quality improvement collaboratives (QICs) to implement national guidelines for reducing primary cesarean births.
They found that these IF processes played an important role in determining implementation success at hospitals participating in a perinatal QIC.

PhD alumnus Rep. Johnny Olszewski named Outstanding Alumnus for UMBC
Representative Johnny Olszewski has been a UMBC graduate with a Ph.D. in Public Policy ('17), Baltimore County Executive, the representative for Maryland's 2nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives, and now he can add one more title to his list: 2025 Outstanding Alumnus for Social & Behavioral Sciences.
On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, he will be honored at the
UMBC Alumni Awards, an annual celebration UMBC Alumni Association Board of Directors holds to honor alumni accomplishments. As UMBC explains, "This award is given to a UMBC graduate who has brought distinction to the University through personal and professional achievement."

1. Constitution Day lecture/discussion with Maryland State Senator William C. Smith, Jr.

shaping civil rights, criminal justice reform, and constitutional
protections in Maryland. His work offers an important window into how
