Farewell to Dr. J Lee Jenkins

The UMBC Department of Emergency Health Services (EHS)
announces Dr. J. Lee Jenkins's departure from our faculty as of January
2021. Dr. Jenkins' last day as UMBC faculty was December 31, 2020, but she
will remain a part of the fabric of our department's history and a part of the
EMS community that we embrace.

Dr. Jenkins first came to UMBC from Texas in 1994, where she had graduated from
paramedic school. She completed her undergraduate degree in EHS Management in
1997, followed by a 1999 Master's degree in the EHS Epidemiology and Preventive
Medicine Track. After graduation, Dr. Jenkins attended medical school at George
Washington University and completed her Emergency Medicine residency and
Disaster Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. She returned to UMBC as a
faculty member in 2016, where she has served as the Department Chair.

During her time at UMBC, Dr. Jenkins secured a CDC-funded contract to develop
the multi-pathogen approach for personal protective equipment and EMS
education. Additionally, she was instrumental in obtaining a National Science
Foundation research grant to study how paramedic students respond to stress
during clinical simulation exercises. During Dr. Jenkins' tenure, the
department successfully launched the PhD EHS concentration in collaboration
with the UMBC School of Public Policy.

Despite leaving service at UMBC, Dr. Jenkins will continue to serve Maryland
and the EMS community clinically. She will continue to work in Emergency
Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she will apply her EMS and
disaster medicine expertise.

We want to thank Dr. Jenkins for her service and dedication to our department
and wish her the best in her future endeavors.
