Paula Maust Creates Open-Source Theory Platform
Discussions of gender in the Western classical music canon have brought forth a tremendous amount of feminist scholarship during the past thirty years, and Philip Ewell’s monumental address at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory on “Music Theory and the White Racial Frame” called out the discipline’s entrenched whiteness and lack of equal representation within the music theory canon. An example of this inequity can be found in the seven most-used music theory textbooks in the United States. These textbooks contain 2930 musical examples of which 1.67% are by non-white composers, and just 2.15% are by women. To address racial and gender imbalances within music theory, Adjunct Faculty Paula Maust committed herself to diversifying and expanding the musical examples used in her theory classes. Her work focused on shedding light on under-represented composers and their music to provide students with a more comprehensive picture of the broad spectrum of humanity that contributed to the richness of Western classical music. To help educators begin the important step of diversifying their own curricula, she created Expanding the Music Theory Canon, an extensive database of several hundred musical examples covering topics studied in most undergraduate theory sequences. This is the first open-source platform of this magnitude and scope tailored specifically to theory classroom instructors. By amplifying the voices of forgotten historical figures, Dr. Maust hopes to both expand the canon and revise the narrative concerning the valuable contributions of women and BIPoC composers from the common practice era (1650-1900).
Dr. Maust was assisted by music composition majors Jeffrey Martin and Kathryn Blake and music technology major Garret Walton. Jeffrey engraved the musical excerpts and Kathryn is curating a selection of pieces with Dr. Maust that employ twentieth-century compositional techniques from I Resound Press this spring. Garret Walton assisted with data entry and editing recordings.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice in the classroom
The Texas A&M Department of English invites you to a series of talks and workshops surrounding
the topic of how we can better teach writing now by addressing
diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the writing classroom.
Events are aimed at bringing together scholars doing research in social
justice pedagogies, cultural rhetorics, and composition/professional
writing in our rapidly changing media landscape.

Greg Kalember Mixes Virtual Concert for UN Chamber Music Soc
Professor of the Practice, Greg Kalember was recently the mix engineer for the United Nations Chamber Music Society virtual concert commemorating the lives lost during the Holocaust. The collaboration also featured contributions from music technology students Josef Trepetin, Noah Hawes, and Dan Kantzler. The program included remarks by UN Officials and music by various Jewish composers.

R is a powerful open source software system for statistical computing. It has become immensely popular due to its intuitive programming language, built-in support for statistical procedures, and ability to produce beautiful graphics. R is extensible through a package system, and numerous contributions from its user community are freely available. R is available on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms. The Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting (CIRC) has created the linked videos to get you familiar with R.

Moving Forward with Purpose Group -
a 5-week group teaching students strategies to improve their motivation
and increase their sense of control or purpose in life. Any students
looking for help with "starting fresh" in 2021 or who are struggling
with procrastination or career/academic indecision could benefit greatly
from the group!
You've Got This Group -
a 4-week group the Counseling Center has run for several years now that
has been very successful in helping students develop skills for coping
with stress, anxiety, and depression. Please consider it if you know of
students who struggle with becoming easily overwhelmed or who find that
emotional distress gets in the way of their academic success or
personal well-being
The other groups include Graduate Student Support Group, Trans Support Group, and Women of Color Support Group. Please take a moment to read about them in the attached flyer.

CCBC Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning Conference

This year we will explore the theme "Infusing Classrooms & Institutions with Culturally Relevant Pedagogy."
Our day two keynote is Dr. J. Luke Wood, who will speak about his groundbreaking work with males of color at San Diego State and beyond.
Our opening day keynote is Professor Michelle D. Wright, the creator of Africana Studies at CCBC, who recently has come off sabbatical where she has studied the hidden history of Hilton Manor, formerly a tobacco plantation on what is now our Catonsville campus. They are both joined by 20 presenters responding to the conference theme.

NOAA Scholarships and Summer Internship Opportunities
Application Deadline on February 1st
Hey Political Science Students,
The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration) is accepting applications for two different scholarships and summer internship opportunities for students who meet a specific set of criteria. To learn more and determine if you are eligible to apply for either of their scholarships please visit the following link:
