All full-time faculty or graduate students working on/in Baltimore are eligible to apply.

$3,000 provided for participation in the summer institute and follow up meetings.

  1. Project Idea (300 word or less)
  2. Statement of Interest (300 words or less)
  3. Define public humanities (100 words or less)
  4. Bio (75 words or less)

The Baltimore Field School is a planning intensive focusing on building collaborative public humanities projects developed with community partners. Sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project seeks to create a model of ethical humanities research and teaching in Baltimore and cities like it. During 2021, we will focus on programming, a week-long summer institute, and a fall convening. The Baltimore Field School is committed to anti-racist and decolonial models of engagement working with communities in Baltimore.

Fellows will be required to:

  • Attend the summer institute for one week in June (M June 21 – F June 25). The hybrid institute will offer virtual meetings, panels, and work sessions for four hours per day (10am-12pm + 1-3pm) and optional in person programming and events with community partners.
  • Attend a reconvening for one day in August TBD to debrief.
  • Give feedback on the project through a questionnaire and submit suggestions for fall 2021 programming.

Fellows should bring interest in or an idea for a public humanities project and/or course focusing on Baltimore. Fellows should be interested in discussing and developing ethical methods for public humanities work in Baltimore and cities like it.

In the article, Drs. Short and Martinez explore the impact of the pandemic on four areas of urban structure and planning: transformations in the configuration of public spaces, transportation, urban connectivities, and urban economies. They examine the challenges the pandemic brings to light for cities, and how it might provide an opportunity for more sustainable city planning.

In the summer of 2020, OHMA launched a public workshop series exploring anti-oppression and decolonial approaches to oral history. The instructors from that series collaborated with us to curate the next round of workshops, which begins March 20th.

Oral history has a strong tradition as a progressive practice, focused on amplifying marginalized voices not typically given powerful platforms to speak in public. Oral historians have documented the stories of struggles for justice around the world, and at times have participated in those struggles. At the same time, as a field oral history has excluded Indigenous people and practices from the legitimacy we have so laboriously built. Leadership in our organizations and institutions has been predominantly white, even while people of color have played key roles and invested their time and energy in building these institutions.

In this series, we share visions for oral history in which people of color - their knowledge, skills, practices and voices - are at the center of our practice. This is not a diversity approach, in which our field remains white-led but invites some people of color in. It is an anti-oppression approach, in which we reorient our work to challenge structural oppression actively, expecting that that will change our work and our field in deep ways. We invite you to learn, grow, imagine and be challenged.

TIRF – The International Research Foundation for English Language Education – is pleased to announce its 2021 Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) competition. Grants of up to $5,000 will be made to successful applicants investigating a range of topics in English language education. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 26, 2021. 

There are two types of grants offered through TIRF’s DDG program. The Baltimore Field School is a planning intensive focusing on building collaborative public humanities projects developed with community partners. Sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project seeks to create a model of ethical humanities research and teaching in Baltimore and cities like it. During 2021, we will focus on programming, a week-long summer institute, and a fall convening. The Baltimore Field School is committed to anti-racist and decolonial models of engagement working with communities in Baltimore.

All full-time faculty or graduate students working on/in Baltimore are eligible to apply.

On March 8, 2021 Teresa D. Daniell of LLC Cohort 17 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

Her virtual defense went very smoothly and she gave an excellent presentation of her dissertation research, "Bridging Cultural Borderlands of Identity: Latina Veterans on Negotiating Double Minority Status in the Military."
