    <p><em>We are currently looking for Alternative Spring Break (ASB)
    '22 leaders. Each leader will help develop plans and learning opportunities for
    the week of UMBC’s Spring Break, and will work in collaboration with the other
    leaders and Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff to create a holistic,
    empowering ASB experience for all participants. All undergraduate students are

<Title>REMINDER:  Survey Data Research Possibilities Workshop</Title>

    <span><p><span>The National Center for Health Statistics Research Data Center (NCHS/RDC) provides researcher access to restricted-use national survey data from NCHS surveys and other federal surveys. </span></p>
    <p><span>This presentation by </span>Jing Tian, M.D., Ph.D., of the Research Data Center at the National Center for Health Statistics and Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) <span>will provide information about the national survey data and how to access it. Geared especially for faculty and advanced graduate students, information about the national survey data linked to other datasets could help broaden the scope of faculty and student research and help generate new research ideas and hypotheses. </span></p></span><span><p><span>Some of the survey data include the National Health Nutrition and Examination Survey (NHANES), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Hospital Care Survey (NHCS) and National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The RDC is responsible for protecting the confidentiality of survey respondents or establishments who provided the data while providing access to the restricted-use data for research purposes. </span></p>

<Title>Campaign Internship Opportunity</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Hey Political Science Students,<div><br></div>
    <div>Baltimore County Council candidate Paul D. Dongarra is looking for interns to help support him in his campaign efforts. He is running for an open seat for the Baltimore County Council in district one. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><em>Intern duties may include:</em></div>
    <div><em><br></em></div>
    <div>
    <p><em>● </em><em>Developing Campaign Literature including: website content,
    print material, phone banking and canvasser scripts.</em></p>
    <p><em></em></p>
    
    <p><em>● Voter registration with the goal of increasing voter
    turnout from 2018 gubernatorial campaign.</em></p>
    <p><em></em></p>
    
    <p><em>● Interfacing with Campaign Platform to develop robust voter
    identification program (analyzing voter data to identify individuals most likely to
    vote and identifying issues of interest to them)</em></p>
    <p><em></em></p>
    
    <p><em>● Analysis of Precinct information from previous council
    races to determine best voter outreach strategies</em></p>
    <p>There are many other responsibilities that this internship includes. However, I would like to remind you of the following opportunity regarding obtaining financial support for unpaid internships. </p>

    service/volunteer opportunity at a Maryland-based organization for Summer
    2021? <strong>Whether you have already accepted an unpaid summer position OR
    are planning to obtain one,</strong> we encourage you to apply now for a
    competitive financial stipend through UMBC's Student Internship &amp; Service
    Fund! This fund is co-sponsored by the Career Center and Shriver Center,
    and is made possible by the generous support of our  alumni, campus
    and community members.</em></p>
    <p><strong><em>Stipend Award Amounts:</em></strong><em></em></p>
    <ul>
     <li>
    <strong><em>$1,500
         stipend</em></strong><em> for unpaid internships totaling 120 hours or

<Title>ASIA 100 Offered This Fall in Two Formats</Title>

    <div>If you need ASIA 100, please take note that the course is ONLY taught in fall semesters.  To maximize flexibility this fall, there will be two sections: section one (ASIA 100-01) is an online asynchronous course, and section two <span>(ASIA 100-02)</span><span> is a completely in-person course meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.  Please make sure you sign up for the section that fits your needs and schedule best.</span>

    <div>Mr. Lee Boot, Director of UMBC's Imaging Research Center and affiliate faculty member of the LLC Program, is offering PUBL 610 Data Visualization Concepts during summer session 1. The course will be held from June 1 to July 8 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings online.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The field and practices of data visualization are rapidly expanding to<br>provide ways to effectively analyze and communicate data-derived information. The opportunities for, and value of, the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to do this well are valuable across sectors and domains. In this course students will learn and apply foundational concepts needed not only to represent data, but to communicate their meaning in ways that can powerfully engage others. This course provides an opportunity to learn the visualization-related fundamentals of perception, chart-making, design, and storytelling.<br>

    <p>URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.</p>
    <p>Applications require a research proposal and mentor statement of support. If you want to discuss possibilities for doing a URA through the Asian Studies program, reach out to me (<a href="mailto:%20oyen@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">oyen@umbc.edu</a> or make an appointment to talk <a href="https://calendly.com/oyen" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>).</p>
