Announcing: Visiting Lecturer in Orchestral Studies
1-year position
The Department of Music at UMBC seeks a well-qualified Lecturer (Full-time including benefits) with a primary specialization in orchestral conducting beginning August 23, 2021. This position will be responsible for the direction of the UMBC Symphony Orchestra with additional teaching duties to be determined by the interests of the applicant and the needs of the department.
Applicants who demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion by way of teaching, performing, publishing, or volunteer experiences are urged to submit an application. Salary is competitive. Master’s degree is required. The successful applicant will be an experienced conductor, with additional teaching skills/experiences that will serve to broaden our curricular offerings. Applicants should send a current CV; a detailed statement of conducting qualifications and teaching interests and preparedness; dated links for up to 3 video excerpts (totaling no more than 30 minutes of material) demonstrating conducting skills in a variety of styles (please include a video example of a rehearsal if possible); and, current contact information for three references. Welcome to CompWire, a festival of new music and student composers at UMBC, featuring ensembles in residence Strata and Voyager String Quartet!
From April 7th to 18th, there will be a variety of concerts of new music including professional ensemble performances, eight senior recitals in one weekend, and more than 25 premieres!
As a part of Compwire, UMBC and the University of Idaho started an exchange project where composers from the universities were paired up to interview each other about their music in Spring 2021. After the interviews, each participant created a video or podcast to spotlight the composer and their music.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
Environmental factors are often ignored by mainstream health programming. At an empowerment and development level, if communities are equipped with an understanding of how ecological factors affect human health, they can better manage their ecosystems and their population’s wellbeing. Thus, the shortfall of environmental knowledge and consideration in global health interventions spurred the formation of my degree. The Individualized Study Program has been the perfect place for me to develop the skills necessary to be a global health team manager because it has enabled me to glean perspective and knowledge from health sciences, geography, and environmental science in order to better comprehend and work to address environmental issues that impact population health. An interdisciplinary approach to studying the gap between global health and environmental factors has empowered me with an integrative way of thought that matches the multidimensional nature of public health crises.
What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?
As an aspiring mixed methods researcher and the daughter of Latin American immigrants, my intellectual passions include designing, implementing, and evaluating collaborative social behavioral interventions that benefit marginalized migrants, women, and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). My drive to advance implementation science research in LAC motivates me to earn a PhD. Therefore, after graduation, I will immediately enter into a PhD program in public health (I am still deciding which of my PhD program offers to choose for fall 2021). The rigorous process of developing and defending my own undergraduate degree plan has instilled in me transferable skills relevant to graduate school. For instance, working with multiple mentors has enhanced my skills in stakeholder management and communication. I also gained experience in applying for and earning grants, managing a project budget, and synthesizing distinct insights and theories from across my coursework in order to ask innovative questions. All of these experiences will provide a key foundation for my doctoral training. Most importantly, the strategies of integration and scholarship of interdisciplinarity that I have gained through my degree enables me to approach problems from a different perspective which will enrich the projects and classes I partake in.

Both Andrew and Tristan are in their final semesters at UMBC, completing their capstone projects and looking ahead to more entrepreneurial ventures. While taking INDS 480 in Fall 2020 Andrew approached Tristan and asked if he wanted to collaborate on this project. With Andrew’s INDS degree titled “Digital Product Development and Design”, and Tristan’s titled “Development of Digital Therapeutics for Psychotherapy”, it was a clear match that these two work together to design a product that merged technology and psychology.
Over the years, they had been hearing about the Idea Competition through their Entrepreneurship courses. In the 2020 Idea Competition, 19 submissions were received and 6 were asked to present before a panel of three successful entrepreneurs. Andrew and Tristan were coached by Vivian Armor, director of the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, who was enthusiastic and encouraging throughout the process.
For their 3-minute presentation, Andrew and Tristan explained Sproutful and how it works. They outlined how this smart watering plant system monitors meditation and mindfulness habits. By having a physical component to the practice one has a visual sitting piece to recognize their growth in the mindfulness habit. The judges announced that the award for Best Presentation was unanimous. One judge said, “Your presentation was phenomenal”, while another said, “The coordination between you two was seamless.” Despite the Idea Competition held virtually for the first time, Andrew and Tristan practiced their clear message and worked through potential technological issues that might be faced as a two-person team. Andrew said, “Through INDS 480, we were taught public speaking skills, making sure that what we said was precise and succinct.”
This spring, Andrew and Tristan have entered Sproutful into the
Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC), also sponsored by the Alex. Brown Center. In this competition the entrants are asked to build a prototype of the product and present a business plan. Winners of the CIBC are offered opportunities to be partnered with venture capitalists. The cash prize can be a great incentive, but Tristan said that he is most looking forward to getting connected with the network of entrepreneurs in the community. Andrew has already been contacted by alumni who remain engaged with the entrepreneurial competitions at UMBC. In fact, INDS alumnus Marcus Proctor won the first CBIC in 2014 with his business idea “EduPal”.
We intend to follow Andrew and Tristan as they work through the final rounds of the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition this spring, taking Sproutful to the next level.
