Apply now to participate in a Faculty Learning Community!

<Tagline>Applications for AY 2021-22 FLCs are due Monday, June 21</Tagline>

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. And if you generally prepare and teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to have the kinds of conversations with colleagues from across the disciplines that would enrich your teaching practice, help you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at UMBC fill this niche. The Faculty Development Center is pleased to announce five new proposed topics for Faculty Learning Communities for AY 2021-22:

Faculty Mentoring Faculty and Graduate Students (proposed by Suzanne Braunschweig, GES)

Teaching Creativity Across Disciplines (proposed by FDC staff)

Inclusive Teaching (proposed by FDC staff)

Fostering Pedagogies that Engage and Support Transfer Students (proposed by Sarah Jewett, Provost's Office)

SoTL Writing Accountability (proposed by Liz Stanwyck, MATH & STAT)

What are FLCs? Faculty Learning Communities are groups of 6-12 self-selected faculty who are co-learners, joining together across disciplines for a year-long exploration of specific evidence-based teaching practices. FLCs support faculty in developing a new pedagogical approach, new kinds of assignments, and/or new ways to assess student learning. Participants who meet the attendance requirements (missing no more than 3 meetings over the academic year) receive a professional development award.

Who is eligible? All current faculty, as well as staff who teach, are encouraged to participate.

To apply: The application form contains descriptions of each of the proposed FLCs. Please submit your application to fdc@umbc.edu by Monday, June 21. Although you can only participate in one FLC, you may apply to more than one, ranking your choices on the application form. The FLCs that receive the greatest numbers of applicants will go forward as FDC-sponsored FLCs for 2021-22.

To learn more about the FLC program: Please visit the FLC 2020-21 ThreadBox where you can check out and comment on the current year’s FLCs’ presentations of findings and takeaways. Further general information about the FLC program is available on our website.

I had an interest in studying a user experience related field when I entered college. I started as a computer science and graphic design double major. However, I found more UX-related courses offered by the information systems undergraduate department and human-centered computing graduate department. I felt that INDS was a great fit for me because I had the opportunity to partake in specific courses from a variety of fields/departments. This opportunity allowed me to have an interdisciplinary degree that better entailed the skills and knowledge of UX than any one major/disciplinary field.

UMBC COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic

We are now able to offer free on-campus COVID-19 vaccinations. Our first clinic will be for students on Tuesday, May 11 from 9 AM - 1 PM in the UC Ballroom and we will be offering the Pfizer vaccine, sign-up here for the first dose. We have a limited number of shots so please sign up ASAP. When you arrive on campus, please park in Lot 8. You must wear a mask and practice physical distancing.

The Pfizer vaccination requires two shots three weeks apart. We will offer second shots on campus on Tuesday, June 1, 9AM - 1 PM. You should make plans to complete your vaccination series by either a) have a secure plan to return to campus for your second shot, or b) commit to scheduling the second Pfizer dose at a pharmacy or mass vaccination site near your home. You must get both shots on schedule to comply with the vaccine requirement for Fall 2021. You can sign-up to receive your second dose on campus here.

We know that these dates overlap with the end of the semester and that some students may be concerned about vaccine reactions. While reactions to the first shot are typically mild, you are welcome to wait and seek vaccination off-campus at a later time. We also plan to offer additional clinics on campus throughout the summer. Remember that you are fully vaccinated 2 weeks after your last vaccine dose, so plan enough time after your second shot before you return to campus in the fall.

If you are unable to schedule an appointment for May 11, we will be having another clinic on Wednesday, May 12 from 9 AM - 12 noon, offering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
