Steven Dashiell awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship
at American University
Steven
Dashiell (LLC '20) has been selected for a Postdoctoral Fellowship for
Academic Diversity at American University in Washington DC. "These
positions are designed to support the development of early-career scholars who
show promise of distinguished research careers and who are from sectors of the
population historically underrepresented on the professorial faculties of U.S.
colleges and universities."
Steven
will hold a dual appointment; he is assigned to both the Department of
Sociology (under Dr. Celine-Marie Pascale) and the Game Lab (under Dr. Andrew
Phelps). He will be doing research on the nature of discourse in
male-dominated subcultures, in addition to game theory research on tabletop
role-playing games. The appointment is for two years.
Steven
personally and deeply thanks his program advisor, Dr. Christine Mallinson, and
dissertation advisor, Dr. Carole McCann, for helping him to make this dream
appointment a reality.

New POLI Course Added POLI 439: Special Topics in Public Law
Ending Juvenile Mass Incarceration through Public Policy
Hey Political Science Students,
I wanted to inform you that the department just added an additional upper level course for the Fall semester. The course topic is ending
juvenile mass incarceration through public policy. The course is not limited to just POLI students, so please let students from other departments who may be interested in taking the course know about this opportunity. Please see the course description below.
POLI 439: Special Topics in Public Law
Topic: Ending juvenile mass incarceration through public
policy
Notes: This class will explore the role and function
of the juvenile justice system and how structural as well as policy-based
reforms have resulted in lower incarceration rates for youth in Maryland. We
will explore strategies as they exist around the country and engage in
discussion on their effectiveness and impact on public safety in Maryland
through a race equity lens.
The course will be co-taught by Sam Abed, Secretary of
the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) in Baltimore and Betsy Tolentino,

Tunisia Lumpkin Successfully Presents
her Dissertation Research Proposal
The LLC Program is pleased to announce that Tunisia Lumpkin of
Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on May 17, 2021.
Her
project is titled, "What I Like: Chronicles of Black Males' Perspectives on Black Women's Hair." After Tunisia's presentation, she had a
substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Tunisia's
committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

Alison Morrow Successfully Presents
her Dissertation Research Proposal
The LLC Program is pleased to announce that Alison Morrow of
Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on May 17, 2021.
Her
project is titled, "Situating Adaptations Studies as Popular Cultural Memory." After Alison's presentation, she had a
substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Alison's
committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

ENGL 243: Baltimore Poetry & Politics Fall Seats Available!
Seats are still available for an exciting new 200-level English course in Fall 2021: Baltimore Poetry and Politics. Taught by Prof. Finberg, this course will cover poetry and other writing genres to illuminate local politics and social movements. A full description is below. Baltimore Poetry and Politics (ENGL 243)

This class will conduct a deep investigation of the connection between poetry and activism in the communities surrounding UMBC. To focus on the relation between local events, social justice, and literature, students will read recent work of Baltimore poets and organizers as we learn about the history and continuation of the 2015 uprising, Baltimore #BlackLivesMatter, and mobilization around red-lining and underinvestment in the city. The course is built on a series of Baltimore experiences such as guest speakers and workshops, collaborations with local organizations, and fieldtrips (Covid safety permitting).
