<Title>Prof. Emeritus Salkever's research on SSA study enrollees</Title>

    <div>Public Policy Professor Emeritus David Salkever has coauthored a new article in the journal <em>Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research.</em> </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>In his research, Dr. Salkever and his coauthors used Social Security Disability Benefits application data, local area economic characteristics, benefits receipt information, and interviews to predict the likelihood of applicants denied disability benefits to enroll in the Supported Employment Demonstration study, run by the Social Security Administration.</div>

<Title>AUDITION for UMBC's Jazz Groups</Title>

    <div>So, do you like jazz? There are currently six jazz groups at UMBC, the Jazz Ensemble, four small groups, and the Jazz Guitar Ensemble. The audition is the same for all groups. Non-traditional instruments are welcome. Make music! Make friends! Receive course credit!</div>

    <div>Also, we host our own jazz festival every spring. Recent guests include saxophonist Charlie Young, latin jazz drummer Vince Cherico, drummer Allison Miller, bassist Ben Allison, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Ben Street, pianist Larry Willis, tubist/saxophonist Howard Johnson, and saxophonist George Garzone. In addition to hosting our own festival, our students perform regularly off campus and at other area festivals.</div>

    <div>The research, which was the focus of Dr. Dong's dissertation work at UMBC's School of Public Policy, examines the impact of Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion on people with disabilities - including health insurance coverage, access, and service use for working-age adults with disabilities. </div>

<Title>Linehan Artist Scholar awarded JOG fellowship</Title>

    <div>Congratulations to <strong>Byanca Morales Cabrera</strong> who was awarded the <a href="https://imaginingamerica.org/what-we-do/fellowships/jgs-fellows/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Imagining America Joy of Giving Fellowship</a> for the 2021-2022 academic year. A Visual Arts major in graphic design, photography, and print media, she is also a Linehan Artist Scholar class of 2024. Byanca Morales Cabrera creates artworks with a focus on diversity and the representation of communities of color; she tackles cultural taboos specifically within the LatinX community. Her past work employs portraiture, cultural textile pattern designs, mark-making, and in the near future, she will expand her artistic practice into public art and mixed-media installations.</div>

    <div>The <a href="https://imaginingamerica.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Imagining America</a> JOG Fellowship provides a $2000 tuition scholarship, mentorship guidance along with financial support for a community project. As a JOG Fellow, Byanca will receive registration and travel award to participate in the national gathering that will take place Fall 2022. UMBC is an active member of Imagining America and in 2015, was the co-host of the <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/umbc-hosts-2015-imagining-america-national-conference-in-partnership-with-local-communities-universities-civic-leaders/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">national conference</a> that took place on campus and downtown Baltimore City in cooperation with MICA, Morgan State University, and Towson University. </div>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Please join us in welcoming Charles Kaylor as Lecturer &amp; Director of GIS+Cartography Lab. Mr. Kaylor joins us from Temple University, where he spent the past 12 years in the position of Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Urban Studies and Geography. Prior to Temple, Mr. Kaylor earned an M.U.P. from the University of Michigan, an MA in Political Science from Duke University, and a BA from Carlton College. His interests include sustainable infrastructure, specifically how spatial technologies can be used to plan for climate change. His recent projects include measuring social vulnerability to climate change in the Mekong Delta, climate change and public opinion, and broadband expansion. Mr. Kaylor has a broad teaching background in spatial analysis and methods. Recent courses include basic and advanced GIS, spatial statistics, and advanced spatial analytical techniques. This fall he’ll be teaching GES 286.</div></div>
