AOK Library & Gallery Spotlight! Guest Instructor Series will be hosting a public symposium throughout the Fall 2021 semester examining the topic of radicalism. The aim of the symposium is not to declare a definitive definition of radicalism but to offer a regional and historical context to the term. The inspiration for the theme is the Library’s Special Collections’ Radical Literature and Alternative Press Center collections.  

Exact dates for the lectures and how to register can be found on the flier below and link. Guest speakers will include UMBC scholars and experts, UMBC undergraduate CoLab students, and Baltimore-area individuals and groups involved in activism, radical literature, and the study of radical movements in Baltimore.

The Symposium is co-sponsored by the American Studies Department, History Department, Media and Communication Studies Department, and Undergraduate Research and Prestigious Scholarships.

On-Demand Film Screening: "The Vow from Hiroshima"

This documentary, which follows the life of a survivor of the Hiroshima bombings and her quest to abolish global nuclear weapons, is available to screen online September 14-Sept 21. For more information, including how to access the on-demand online film, please see the event announcement on myUMBC. 

Asian Studies, together with MLLI and History, will also host a virtual lecture about Hiroshima's youth and the way they are carrying survivors' legacies forward, with Mary Popeo on the 21st (see below). 

Virtual Lecture with Mary Popeo: "Inspired by the Hibakusha"

Those who screen the film may also be interested in a follow-up virtual lecture hosted by Mary Popeo, entitled "Inspired by the Hibakusha." Mary will join us from Hiroshima, where she works with the organization Peace Culture Village, a youth-led movement dedicated to creating a sustainable peace culture.
