Daniel Pesca Receives SEED Grant

<Tagline>An Initiative to Imagine a More Inclusive Piano Canon</Tagline>

Daniel Pesca will co-lead a multi-institutional effort to bring music departments and piano studios from five institutions around the country together to research, perform, record, and teach the piano music of Black American composers. The program includes a range of online activities, including lectures by eminent scholars of the repertoire, a series of masterclass exchanges between institutions, and a final recording project. The lectures address many aspects of music-making, from considerations of social context to pedagogy, from historical inquiry to the creation of brand new work. Students will be empowered to grow as musicians as they enjoy the benefits of working with professionals from across the country, learning the process of making a high-level recording, and discovering unfamiliar repertoire. The fruits of this year-long effort will be shared via an online database. After the pilot year, the team intends to expand their reach by encouraging other institutions to join the initiative as a small but vital part of a larger conversation in classical music institutions of all sorts about inequities in representation.

Congrats to Daniel Pesca!

Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.

Let's show Zareen and Ali our care and support by helping them to raise the funds they need to safely bring their family members here.

Race, Ethnicity, and Place Conference: Oct 20-23, 2021

<Tagline>Justice and the City in an Age of Social Division</Tagline>

Following a successful 2020 virtual conference in place of the
long-planned XIth Race, Ethnicity, and Place Conference (REP) in
Baltimore, organizers are planning a hybrid in-person and virtual
conference for October 20-23, 2021, together with the The Mid-Atlantic
    Division of the AAG (MAD-AAG).

For almost twenty years, the Race, Ethnicity, and Place (REP)
Conference has brought together diverse groups of scholars to facilitate
research on race and ethnicity and has provided a critical gathering
place of support and collaboration for underrepresented scholars. The
REP Conference provides important opportunities for faculty,
professionals, and graduate students to engage in discussions of timely
and critical issues regarding race and ethnicity in multiple places and
    spatial contexts worldwide.

The Mid-Atlantic Division of the AAG (MAD-AAG), as the AAG’s oldest
regional division, has been working for more than 70 years to facilitate
inclusive community building among a diverse and collegial mix of
professional and academic geographers, students, and community members.
By collaborating with REP, MAD hopes to join an even larger community of
scholars, activists, and engaged citizens who—working together—hold
Baltimore and its residents as catalyzing leaders for a national
dialogue on race, ethnicity, and place.

Under the current political climate, it is critical that scholars
from a broad range of perspectives develop transformative research to
foster inclusive policy, advocacy, and action. The 2021 XI REP/MAD
Conference in Baltimore aims to create common ground across multiple
ways of studying race and ethnicity and to broaden participation of
scholars in geography and related social and spatial sciences whose
research furthers scholarship relating to race, ethnicity, and place.
