Artist Annet Couwenberg posed the question, “Are we becoming an extension of the machine or the other way around?” as she began a unique collaboration in Fall 2020 with UMBC engineering students led by Professor of Mechanical Engineering Tim Topoleski with the assistance of software developer and engineer Alan Grover to create her interactive sculpture Cleft.
Annet Couwenberg, Alan Grover, Dr. Topoleski, and participating students will discuss more about the process behind Cleft’s creation, which is on view in her exhibition Annet Couwenberg: Sewing Circles at the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture at UMBC until December 11, 2021. The conversation will be moderated by Lori Rubeling, curator of the exhibition and Professor of Art and Communication Design at Stevenson University. The Youtube Live link will be provided as soon as it's created.

Highlighting Summer HAPP Intern Bryce Mack
“My name is Bryce Mack. I am a Senior at UMBC. I will be graduating this upcoming Fall semester. I transferred to UMBC from Howard Community College with an AA In Public Health and chose to attend UMBC because they offered the administrative side of Public Health. I chose to study Public Health/Health Administration because public health is a field where you get to help people better their lives. It is a field where you can actively see that you are making a difference in the world. At my internship at Retriever Essentials I chose to study the Save-A-Swipe program where students can donate meal swipes to students suffering from food insecurity. The rate of food insecurity at UMBC is higher than any other college in the University System of Maryland. Now there are many different factors as to why this is, but it was shocking for me to see while conducting my research. No student should have to go hungry and the Save-A-Swipe program works to mediate this problem. I researched similar programs at other colleges and universities and worked to find the common threads and the divergent elements between the programs. With this new research available and the outstanding staff at Retriever Essentials the Save-A-Swipe program will become more extensive and reach more students suffering from food insecurity.”

Dr. Shawn Bediako will be giving the Racial Equity and Action Keynote Lecture for the 24th Annual Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Symposium at the University of Pennsylvania on October 22. Ciara Christian successfully presents
her Dissertation Research Proposal
The LLC Program is pleased to announce that Ciara Christian of
Cohort 21, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on September 30, 2021.
Her
project is titled, "Talkin' Shit, Pouring Libations, and Building Community: Exploring Podcasts as a Contemporary Site of Black Feminist Knowledge Production and Activism."
After Ciara's presentation, she
had a
substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Ciara's
committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

Indigenous Perspectives on Decolonization
Tuesday, November 16th @2pm
The program for Arab and Muslim American Studies is hosting its first event of the academic year: Indigenous Perspectives on Decolonization.
During the event, three indigenous speakers from diverse communities discuss their perspective on indigenous identity and politics, decolonization practices, and solidarity. Our speakers include:
Dr. Ashley Minner (Lumbee Tribe NC)
Ashley Minner is a community-based visual artist from Baltimore and an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. She received her MFA (’11) and MA (’07) in Community Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art, and her PhD (’20) in American Studies from University of Maryland College Park. Ashley recently worked as a professor of the practice and folklorist in the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where she also served as director of the minor in Public Humanities. She currently works as a curator for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Dana Olwan (Palestinian)
Dana Olwan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at Syracuse University. Her work is located at the nexus of feminist theorizations of gender violence, transnational solidarities, and critical feminist pedagogies. She is the recipient of a Mellon Emerging Faculty Leader Award from the Institute of Citizens and Scholars, a Future Minority Studies postdoctoral fellowship, and a Palestinian American Research Council grant. Her work has appeared in Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Feminist Formations, the Journal of Settler Colonial Studies, American Quarterly, and Feral Feminisms. She is co-editor with Margaret A. Pappano of Muslim Mothering: Local and Global Histories, Theories, and Practices (Demeter Press, 2016). Her first book Gender Violence and The Transnational Politics of the Honor Crime was published by Ohio State University Press in 2021. She is currently working on a new project that is centered on marriage and divorce laws and citizenship practices in the Arab world, with a specific focus on Jordan and women’s access to personal status rights. She teaches courses on feminist theory, comparative settler colonialisms, and gender politics in the Middle East and North Africa. She is co-editor (with Chandra Talpade Mohanty) of Comparative Feminist Studies from Palgrave Mcmillan.
Dr. Stephanie Nohelani Teves (Kanaka Maoli).
Stephanie Nohelani Teves (Kanaka Maoli) is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa where she teaches courses on Indigenous feminisms and queer theory. She is author of Defiant Indigeneity: The Politics of Hawaiian Performance and co-editor of Native Studies Keywords. She has published articles on Hawaiian sexuality, diaspora, hip-hop, film, and feminisms in Hawaiʻi and Oceania. She has received fellowships from Yale University, the University of Oregon, and the Ford Foundation. Her articles have appeared in American Quarterly, The Drama Review, the American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and the International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies. She is currently co-editing a special issue of Amerasia on Ocean Feminisms and is working on a new book on the queer history of Hawai’i and an oral history project with LGBTQ kupuna (elders).
