Dear English Majors,

Is there a book that you’ve been eager to study, a play you’ve been drafting in your head, a digital tool you’ve been building, or story you’ve been itching to investigate? The English Department Honors Program invites junior or senior English majors to work in close collaboration with a department faculty member to pursue a research-based project of your own design in your final year of study. From science writing to podcasting, literary criticism to poetry, the Honors projects you can pursue reflect the diversity of our field and your own distinctive research interests. 

On Wednesday, October 27th at 12:00 p.m. we invite you to join us on Webex to learn more about the English Honors Program. We'll hear from current and former Honors students, discuss program highlights, sample projects, the application process, and have time for Q&A.

Spring 2022 Registration Is Coming

The schedule for Spring 2022 classes will go live on Monday, October 25 (next week!). Registration starts on November 2, but registration clearance appointments and advising are available now! Visit our handy guide to make sure you'll be ready when your registration time begins!

Winter Session Registration - Now Open!

Are you thinking about taking a winter class, either to catch up, or get ahead? Registration for Winter 2022 is now open. You don't need registration clearance for Winter classes, but you're welcome to make an appointment with Dr. Oyen to talk about ways that a Winter class might fit into your plans. 

Midterms - How's Your Semester Going?

Midterms can be a stressful time, as you juggle lots of deadlines, projects, and exams all at once. There are lots of resources on and around campus to help you manage your time and stress and succeed - here's a few that might be of interest this time of year: 

• Check out the Counseling Center for help with managing time and stress, or visit their Mind Spa if you just need a space to relax someplace quiet for a little while. Someone is available any time, day or night, if you need them. 
• Take a study break! Visit the RAC, explore campus's green spaces, or wander over to Arbutus to get a cup of coffee at OCA Mocha. 
• Need some help with class? The Academic Success Center is your one-stop shop for help with everything from writing to tutoring to academic advocacy on your behalf. Visit them in Sherman Hall 345, or set up an appointment online. 

ASCOM Meetings This Fall

Interested in meeting other students interested in Asian Studies? Check out ASCOM, the Asian Studies Council of Majors! They meet regularly throughout the semester in Fine Arts 558 on Fridays at noon, and new members are always welcome. 

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

• Now through January 6: Winter session registration is open.
• Now through February 4: Advising and registration clearance for Spring 2022 classes. 
• October 22 (Monday): Spring 2022 schedule available online.
• November 2: Spring 2022 registration begins.

You must send a one-paragraph message to Dr. Grodsky (bgrodsky@umbc.edu) explaining WHY you would be a good representative and your current YEAR/GPA. This must be received by 9pm on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20.

Her project is titled, (Be)Longing: Singing the American Iliad. Ethnic Identity Discourses in the Public Sphere: A Micro-History of the German Community and Germania Hall in Troy, NY in Three Vignettes.

After Siobhan’s presentation, she had a substantive discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped Siobhan consider some key issues as she moves forward into the research and writing.

Public Policy is hosting a virtual information session about the Public Policy graduate programs on Thursday, October 28. Please pass along to any potentially interested students - undergrads and masters students alike. 

The Airi Yoshioka Violin Masterclass has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Registrants will be notified via email.

Enjoy documentaries? Join us for an evening to attend a virtual screening of Sundance-nominated climate documentary “Anote’s Ark,” directed by Matthieu Rytz. It focuses on an island nation called Kiribati in the South Pacific struggling with rising sea levels. 

October 27th, 2021 5pm to 7pm 

Using the film we will be exploring climate urgency, civic leadership and our responsibilities as global citizens. Film is followed by a 30 min facilitated discussion.

All register attendees will receive a google calendar invite the Monday before the event with the meeting link.
