Applications are due by Friday 10/29 at 2pm

If you cannot make this deadline, please contact Dr. Antkowiak hussey@umbc.edu about potential flexibility

Maryland’s state legislature, the General Assembly (MGA), matches students to internships with state senators, delegates, committees, and caucuses during its annual January-April session. This popular program engages interns in very substantive legislative work and has helped many recent UMBC graduates who have participated in it gain their first jobs. It also pays a modest stipend.

The MGA requires that prospective interns be sponsored by a professor who provides academic credit for the experience. Interns must be at least 18 years old and have GPAs of at least 3.0. Students with somewhat lower GPAs may be considered if recommended by the sponsoring professor.

Dr. Laura Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) sponsors UMBC students from any major for this experience and offers academic credit through POLI 448 (4 credits). Depending on hours interned, students may be eligible for additional credit. Students seeking this sponsorship should email their completed MGA internship application (2022 Student Intern Application), including all required attachments, to Dr. Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) at lhussey@umbc.edu by October 29th at 2pm. An application for sponsorship also requires an informal interview and two recommendations from faculty. Faculty should convey recommendations directly to Dr. Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) – in informal emails, formal letters, or this Political Science Internship Recommendation Form.

The department continues to offer academic credit for other spring semester internships in politics, public policy, public administration, and the law via POLI 448 and POLI 438, as well as internship placement assistance for qualified juniors and seniors. Please see https://politicalscience.umbc.edu/internships/ for details.

Asian Studies End of October Updates

<Tagline>Advising is Here! Halloween! and More</Tagline>

Halloween is this Sunday. In various parts of Asia - especially in cities and neighborhoods where American expats live - Halloween is becoming more and more popular. This article from New Zealand's Asian Media Centre, published last year, gives a glimpse at what festivities and celebrations you might expect to see this time of year in Japan, China, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Spring 2022 Schedule and Advising are Here!

The Spring 2022 schedule is now live, and you can look online to see what classes will be offered. As you consider what electives you would like to take, you can compare the classes on the Spring 2022 schedule with the Asian Studies course catalog to see what will count towards your ASIA degree, minor, or certificate.

Some options available this spring include ASIA 300 (Music and Identity in the Two Koreas), POLI 309 (Chinese Politics), MLL 333 (Japanese Food Culture), HIST 386 (Hindus, Muslims, and their Others), GWST/HIST 380 (Women and Gender in East Asia), and AMST 375 (a special version of Studies in Asian American Culture which will involve field trips to the Smithsonian). This is just a sample of available options, though - check the schedule for the full listing as you make your plans.

Registration will begin next week (November 2), so make your advising appointment soon - click here for more information.

Winter Registration Continues!

Thinking about a Winter 2022 class? In addition to many classes that satisfy various GEP requirements, there are a few options for Asian Studies students among the more than 100 courses that will be offered this January, including MUSC 230 (Musics of the World), HIST 381 (From Samurai to Salariman), and HIST 434 (Vietnam Wars in International Context). You're welcome to make an appointment with Dr. Oyen to discuss whether a Winter 2022 class makes sense for you and your degree plan.

UMBC's Joseph Beuys Tree Partnership 20th Anniversary Celebration and
Arboretum, by Robert Morris, Performed by UMBC's RUCKUS & Music Department, A UMBC Livewire Event

On Saturday, October 23rd the campus will host UMBC's annual new music festival, Livewire. At 3:30 pm, RUCKUS, the new music ensemble-in-residence, will be joined by additional faculty and student performers to present a special performance of Robert Morris’s Arboretum.

Arboretum is a concert-length work designed as an immersive experience. Performers move around the Sculpture Park as they play, and audience members are encouraged to move as well, changing their perspective on the work over its duration. The composer describes this work as “slowly unfolding... the experience of this music is like watching sunsets, clouds passing, or sea changes.”

The event also marks the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Joseph Beuys Tree Partnership.

A limited number of grass mats will be provided. Feel free to bring your own blanket, lawn chairs, and picnic to enjoy among the crunch of the fall leaves. This event is free and open to the public.
