    <h5>Virtual Humanities Forum Lecture with Dr. Vaporis</h5>
    <p>Join us online on Thursday afternoon for the closing session of the Fall 2021 Humanities Forum, 4-5:30pm, as Dr. Vaporis presents "A Lord, a Pauper, and an Artist: Putting People Back Into Samurai History." More information, and a link to the virtual session, is available on the Dresher Center's website, <strong><a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/events/upcoming/current-humanities-forum/event/95194/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a></strong>.</p>
    <h5>Applications Now Open - JASC 2022</h5>
    <p>The 74th Japan-America Student Conference will bring up to 72 Japanese and American college students from a variety of academic disciplines to live, travel, and conduct original peer-reviewed research together. The session will take place in August 2022, and students will travel to New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. For more information about this exciting program and how to apply, please <a href="https://www.iscdc.org/jasc/2022/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">v<strong>isit their website</strong></a>. The deadline to apply is December 17, 2021.</p>
    <h5>Finals are Coming - Need Help?</h5>
    <p>The end of the semester can be a stressful time, as you juggle deadlines, studying, and everything else. UMBC has many resources to help you; we've listed a few here, but you're also welcome to <strong><a href="mailto:asianstudies@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">email us</a> </strong>if you have any questions or concerns. </p>

<Title>2022 CS3 Summer Fellowships</Title>

    <div class="html-content"> <h4>Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Center for Social Science Scholarship<br>Summer Fellowships!</h4>
    <h4><a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/files/2021/11/CS3-2022-Summer-Fellowship.docx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Download the application here.</a></h4>
    <p>The purpose of this fellowship is to support significant social science research by tenure-track or tenured faculty in the UMBC College of Arts, Humanities &amp; Social Sciences, resulting in a submittable product by December 2022.</p>
    <p>Applications are welcome from any tenured or tenure-track faculty pursuing social science research in any CAHSS department. Fellows will receive a $6,000 award during the summer of 2022. Up to three fellowships will be awarded.</p>
    <p>By December 2022, each Fellow agrees to complete a submittable product, which can include an external grant or fellowship proposal, journal article, policy paper, book manuscript, or book chapter; upon completion, Fellows shall provide a copy of this submitted product to the Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship. Fellows who are preparing an external proposal are expected to work with <a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/grants-administration/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MIPAR </a>for pre- and post-award assistance.</p>
    <p><strong>Interested faculty should complete and submit an application consisting of <a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/files/2021/11/CS3-2022-Summer-Fellowship.docx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>this downloadable 2-page cover sheet and proposal</u> </a>that adheres to the specified guidelines. The deadline for applications is <span>FEBRUARY 15, 2022</span>.</strong></p>
    <p>Applications will be reviewed and ranked by members of the Center for Social Science Scholarship Advisory Board, according to the following criteria:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Quality of proposed research project;</li>
    <li>Significance of the project in its field;</li>
    <li>Publishing/funding potential of the work;</li>
    <li>Qualification of the faculty member to carry out the work, including the requisite expertise in the topic area and prior research productivity;</li>
    <li>Likelihood that the proposed work can be successfully completed with fellowship support and that it will result in a submittable product within the specified time period;</li>
    <li>Approval and recommendation of faculty member’s department chair.</li>
    </ul>

<Title>Harry Bhandari Successfully Defends his Dissertation</Title>

    <div>On November 15, 2021 Harry Bhandari of LLC Cohort 19 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy. He is currently making final edits to his manuscript and hopes to have his degree conferred in December, but no later than May.</div>

    <div>Harry's virtual defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his dissertation research, "The Political Participation and Linguistic Integration of Nepalese Americans."</div>

    <p>Applications for the <a href="http://go2.mailengine1.com/click/f1mm-2gznkg-oqhyds-fd8os204/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Proposal Development</a> Summer Institute and the <a href="http://go2.mailengine1.com/click/f1mm-2gznkg-oqhydt-fd8os205/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Computational Social Science</a> Summer Institute will be due <strong>February 11, 2022. </strong></p>
