Important Notice from NSF regarding Research.gov

<Tagline>***proposal submission requirements**</Tagline>

In accordance with Important Notice No. 147, many National Science Foundation (NSF) program solicitations now require the use of Research.gov for the preparation and submission of proposals. Please be advised that NSF will now start requiring the use of Research.gov for the preparation and submission of proposals in response to program descriptions. As a reminder, FastLane is targeted to be removed as a submission option from all funding opportunities when the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) goes into effect in January 2023. Grants.gov will remain a submission option for most NSF proposals.

Program Descriptions in Research.gov

To assist the research community, NSF developed a dynamic listing of program descriptions that require submission in Research.gov. Follow these steps to determine if your proposal for a specific program description must be prepared and submitted in Research.gov:

· Access the relevant NSF.gov program description page (e.g., Magnetospheric Physics, PD 98-5750).

· View the advisory in the Program Guidelines section on the right side of the program description page and click on the link in the advisory:

Alert: Many NSF programs are only accepting proposals in Research.gov or Grants.gov. FastLane may no longer be a submission option. For more information, please visit Program Descriptions that Require Proposal Preparation and Submission in Research.gov or Grants.gov.

The document will identify program descriptions requiring Research.gov preparation and submission and the associated effective date. This document will be updated on an ongoing basis as FastLane will be removed from all program descriptions as a proposal preparation and submission option when the PAPPG goes into effect in January 2023.

Since many program solicitations also require submission in Research.gov, proposers should pay close attention to the requirements identified in those specific funding opportunities.

Research.gov Proposal Capabilities and Transition from FastLane Proposal Preparation

Nearly all FastLane proposal preparation and submission capabilities are now available in Research.gov. For details about the remaining proposal features that will soon be added to Research.gov, please see the Proposal Submission Capabilities table on the Research.gov About Proposal Preparation and Submission page. To stay informed about Research.gov and FastLane changes, we invite you to join our System Updates listserv. Sign up by sending a blank email to: system_updates-subscribe-request@listserv.nsf.gov.

NSF strongly encourages proposers to prepare and submit all supported proposals in Research.gov now, to facilitate a smooth transition from FastLane proposal preparation to Research.gov over the next several months. In addition, NSF relies on your vital feedback to help ensure the system is working as intended and to identify areas of improvement. Feedback may be submitted at https://www.research.gov/research-web/feedback.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
During my college search, I found the field of Cognitive Science and decided that it was the best course of study to eventually help me achieve my goal of better understanding and supporting people on the autism spectrum. When I chose to come to UMBC, I was excited by the prospect of creating my own degree related to Cognitive Science, which I ultimately narrowed down to Psycholinguistics.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I plan to enroll in a PhD program to study Cognitive Psychology or Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences in which I will build upon the foundation laid by my INDS degree by learning more specifically about how the mind produces and comprehends language and apply that to clinical research with autistic people.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I am a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar and have served on the Sondheim Steering Committee for three years. During my freshman year, I was a member of the Shriver Living Learning Community as well as UMBC's Agribusiness branch of Global Brigades. Through the Shriver Center, I have volunteered with Walking Discovery for all eight semesters and have served as the Student Volunteer Coordinator for the past six. I have been a member of Dr. Mirela Cengher's Applied Behavior Analysis lab for three semesters, and I will be presenting one of our current projects called "Categorizing Errors to Improve Learning Outcomes" at URCAD this spring. I was an Eco-Ambassador with the Office of Sustainability for two years, and I have been UMBC's delegate to the MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition for three semesters. Finally, I am a member of Catholic Retrievers.

Invitation to CAHSS Colloquium Series

The five Research Centers in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are
collaborating to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations among faculty, staff, and students to
build intellectual community within and beyond individual research interests and curricula
offerings. Each year the Center Directors will select a theme as the focus for a year-long
colloquium series. The topic for AY 2022-2023 is resilience.

Resilience is the ability of an entity – a person, an institution, a technology, a community, a
natural environment – to anticipate, respond to, and recover from adverse conditions. The
concept of resilience generally has a positive connotation, but it has also been criticized for
placing on individuals and communities the burden to adapt to adverse and potentially unjust
contexts. Adapting to adverse conditions may not necessarily improve them, so what is the
relationship between resilience, resistance and social change?

The Center Directors will organize an interdisciplinary panel discussion to mark the opening of
the colloquium. We invite departments, programs, and faculty to host additional events about
resilience in AY 2022-2023, such as guest lectures, research seminars, workshops, or field trips.
Events might explore several questions, including the analytical value of the concept of
resilience to specific fields of study, different conceptualizations of resilience, critiques to
conventional thinking on resilience, and the pedagogy of resilience. Faculty should also
consider exploring the theme of resilience in their fall classes and encourage students to
    participate in colloquium events.

We recommend that events be intentionally interdisciplinary. Departments and programs are
encouraged to co-organize events with opportunities for scholars from different disciplines to
compare their perspectives and envision potential collaboration. To discuss or submit an idea
for the colloquium program, please use this form. The Centers will provide funds for the partial
support of a limited number of proposals.
