“Breaking the M.O.L.D.,” the new initiative supported by a $3M grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, jump started its programming with its opening event August 15-16 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) that brought together cohorts from three partner institutions: University of Maryland at College Park (UMD CP), Morgan State University (MSU), and UMBC.
Guest speakers President Valerie Sheares Ashby (UMBC), Provost Hongtao Yu (MSU), Provost Jennifer King Rice (UMD CP) and Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities Stephanie Shonekan (UMD CP) presented opening remarks focusing on leadership in academia and beyond. The initiative’s principal investigators (PIs) and leaders-in-residence (LIRs) led panels, participated in an HumetricsHSS values sorting activity and facilitated frank conversations on challenges universities face today, prompting discussions about creative solutions for a brighter future from scholars in the arts, humanities, and related fields.
Programming for Breaking the M.O.L.D. initiative will include joint cohort meetings throughout the 2022-2023 academic year at partner universities where the participants will learn about each institution’s unique administrative systems. Participants will also meet on their individual campuses to learn more about their own organizations, and to examine how the perspectives of leaders from humanities and the arts can make a unique difference at colleges and universities.

UMBC’S PIs Dean Kimberly Moffitt (CAHSS) and Vice Provost Pat McDermott, as well as faculty LIRs Timothy Nohe and Carolyn Forestiere, will work with UMBC’s faculty cohort. The cohort includes Tamara Bhalla, American studies; Erin K. Hogan, modern languages, linguistics, and intercultural communication; Eve Muson, theatre; Liz Patton, media and communication studies; Orianne Smith, English.

From the editors: The UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research is currently soliciting submissions for its 24th edition to be published in April, 2023. We invite you to submit your research to our journal. The Review offers a rewarding opportunity to get your undergraduate research published!
The deadline to submit is Friday, September 16th. The submission application can be found at: https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/. We encourage students of all majors and disciplines to send in their research! Your papers do not have to be ready for publication or perfect right now, we just want to see the best work and research you have completed! Papers may include original research and/or artistic statements that explore the research and process you have completed, and discoveries you have made.

CADVC Presents "Oletha DeVane: Spectrum of Light and Spirit"
Opening September 22
Featuring nearly 100 artworks, this first retrospective of celebrated Maryland artist Oletha DeVane traces DeVane's extensive career, from her early paintings and works on paper to more recent video artworks and interactive sculpture.
A prolific artist, wayfinder and storyteller, DeVane has spent decades learning and making art about the most profound phenomena of our human condition: spirituality, mythology, and transformative experience, including experiences of hardship. Over the last five decades, as she traveled in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, she became inspired by the stories and characters she encountered. Her artwork brings the unexpected to light, while finding new nuances in the old and familiar, and surprising intersections among those cultures.
A highlight of the exhibition is a large-scale carved sculpture, "Nkisi Woman-Universal Nkisi" (2021-22), which will be activated over the course of the exhibition by visitors who are invited to add beads to its surface. The nkisi is a Kongo cultural figure invested with sacred energy, and this sculpture will catalyze communion and community-building. The work reflects DeVane's fascination with how materials convey meaning and reemerge as myths and memories.
The exhibition also celebrates Oletha DeVane's collaborative activities. Her long-standing collaboration with poet and media personality Tadia Rice, Beyond Bars: Prison Women Speak, will be updated for the exhibition in the form of new video works.
"Oletha DeVane: Spectrum of Light and Spirit" is organized by curator Lowery Stokes Sims and is supported by the Maryland State Arts Council and Baltimore County Commission on Arts and Sciences.
